Patrick: I’ve looked at the two websites. When I hold the cursor over a mailbox I don’t see “Use this mailbox for”.

Now here’s a curious thing. In Mailbox Behaviors if I choose On My Mac I get deleted messages from 5 Sep to 15 Sep. If I choose Trash under that, I only get deleted message from 5 Sep to 11 Sep. However, I’ve just deleted another message, and it doesn’t appear in either option.

Another curiosity:

There are two items in my (OnMyMac) Spam box. Deleting them does not work, so I have dragged them into Trash, but they also remain in Spam. They won’t drag into Desktop Trash.

There is also a message in (OMM) Deleted Messages which I cannot delete.

There’s also another problem: I’m not getting e-mail notification of replies here.

The most recent Mailbox problems mention in posts #21 and 22 might be resolved by rebuilding your Mailboxes - I don't think anyone has mentioned this before...

To do this:

Click on a Mailbox eg Spam (On My Mac) to highlight it. With it highlighted -

Click on "Mailbox" in the top menu bar. From the Drop Down Menu, choose the last item "Rebuild".

When done, repeat for each one of the dodgy Mailboxes. I'm afraid you need to do this one by one.

It's a safe and reliable thing to do.

I’ve tried a rebuild on some boxes, and I must have included the Spam box because that is now empty. However, any deleted items from my Sent box are disappearing but still not appearing anywhere else.

My Trash mailbox has now reverted to messages up to 11 Sep.

I have now managed to create a Trash mailbox. This time Mailbox Behaviors offered me a Trash Mailbox from which I chose Trash. So far it seems to be working. The only curiosity is that it appears to be subdivided into On My Mac and Waitrose; however, the combined box has everything.
Thanks to all for your suggestions and encouragement!

That's how Mail.app works. All similar named mailboxes are grouped together. If you want to open them separately, click the exposer triangle to show/hide them.

Another problem with my mailboxes. A new one has appeared, "VIPs", which includes another, "Jackie...".

I've highlighted VIPs, but when I try to click on "Delete Mailbox" it is not highlighted.

Try reading through your Mail HELP(menu) topics and try to get an understanding as to how all the various mailboxes work.

That should give you an answer.

David, have a look at this: Show emails from VIP senders in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

It tells you about VIP status and how to remove someone's VIP status.

Please don't be put off telling us if this does not help; it's a start.

New problem: I cannot receive e-mails. I have sent myself a test message; I can hear it go, but it doesn't appear in my Sent box, and then doesn't appear in my Inbox.

An additional problem is that I cannot receive notification of replies! But I'll keep checking.

HELP!

Check with your email provider and make sure all of your account settings are accurate. Some email providers won't let you send to yourself from the same address because that is how spammers have been working.

+!

Most ISPs and email servers provide the required settings online. Just make sure they are up to date!!!

Problem solved! Apparently my mailbox was full. I went to webmail and deleted all "deleted" items, of which there were a large number, and since then everything seems to be OK. Must remember this next time it happens!

Thanks for providing the solution you found, it will definitely come in handy for other users somewhere down the line.
