Something is \/\/rong \/\/ith my trackpad. The mouse moves all over the screen and randomly clicks. It's so bad I can't log in. Is there something I can do? It's a macbook from 2010 and filevault is on if that matters.

(sorry for using the \/\/. My double u key doesn't \/\/ork........)

A warm welcome to our Forums. Thank for your post.

The first thing that comes to mind is that your battery, which resides under the trackpad, is swollen and pushing up on the trackpad causing it to behave in this random way.

As your MacBook is 8 years old, you may find the Apple will not carry out repairs and you may be faced with contacting an Apple registered or trusted third part repairer who could sort things out for you - or do the job yourself.

Details can be found at ifixit.com.

Only to suggest that the OP looks to see if OWC (macsales.com) has a replacement battery for that model.

Maybe OT, but I assume that the OP has a valid reason for using FileVault…???

Just saying…

BTW: That's a clever way of creating W's when the normal one won't work. clap.gif

Agree with Ian. Very likely a swollen battery which affects the trackpad and if bad enough, even the keyboard. Probably time to replace that 2010 MacBook or MacBook Pro. You can take a chance on a new battery by looking on eBay for a replacement but that's up to you.

FWIW Chscag, I've purchased several Macbook and MBPro batteries from both Amazon and Ebay that have worked very well and at a fraction of the excessive price Apple charges.

I just check the specs and seller's reputation and don't expect to get a decent long-term working battery if one buys any of the $20.00 or less crazy low priced batteries. But they may work, but I pay what should be a reasonable price for proper capacity replacement batteries.

Just saying… there are some good batteries available out there, just like RAM and prices, Apple's not the only place to shop!!

And sure cheaper than replacing the whole MacBook!!!
