When you purchase the iMac it should have come with whatever was appropriate in the 2011 timespan. Have you upgraded that version of OS X to a newer version? If so, you should be able to continue to get upgrades up to High Sierra which will be the last version that you will be able to use on that machine.

macOS Mojave requires iMac that are from 2012 onward.

The issue you are facing is traditionally with apps that was refunded or something, this is not associated with OS upgrades which can't be returned.

Hi Larry and a warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

Normally, with this situation, I would have suggested that the previous owner had not properly cleared their Mac before selling and that their Apple ID was still associated with that Mac - rather than yours.

But, you say you got this direct from Apple, refurbished. In that case, I have to ask you you a few questions, sorry.

What Operating System was on the Mac when you got it? Your header suggests you are trying to upgrade to El Capitan. Is that correct? Either way, you clearly got this Mac some considerable time ago. Date of purchase was 2011; may I assume that your own Apple ID has worked fine up till now???

Nice to know your Mac's specs too.

Sorry to pester you like this, but your question doesn't make sense unless we know these details.

Please post back.

If El Capitan is installed on your iMac, then you should be able to go right to High Sierra.

You may want to sign out of the macOS App Store, then sign back in.

When you open the App Store app, select the "Featured" section in the right sidebar, and select macOS High Sierra. Can you download from the macOS 10.13.5 High Sierra page that opens?

thank you both, installed high sierra manually.
not sure if this is off topic "now" photoshop CC 2018 crashes when I use nik software which wasn't happening before the OS upgrade. I wish adobe and mac would play together for a change
regards
Larry.

I imagine that Photoshop is compatible with High Sierra, you should make sure that everything else (nik software?) is as well.

I'm going to try re-installing Nik software which has been bought by DX0 maybe that is the issue

See if there is an update for the NIK software (NIKON?)?

What do you need to do with the NIK software? Maybe another software would work better?
