I just upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.11 El Capitan and am having all kinds of problems adjusting, the first of which is with Mail. When I click on the mail icon in the dock instead of opening the mail box it opens a new message page and there is nothing I can do to get out of it except quit mail. This makes it impossible to access my mail box for new messages. Suggestions please

Thank you

poppi

This is not normal Mail.app behavior. Does it do the same thing if you use the Spotlight to search and launch Mail or launch from within Finder? If so, it might be a setting within the app that needs to be fixed/changed.

I wonder if the icon on the Dock has somehow been corrupted to point to an open new mail message instead of to the Mail app itself. What I would do is to drag the mail icon from the Dock and drop it when it turns shows "Remove" drop it. Now go to Applications, find the Mail icon and open Mail. Now right click on the Mail icon the will appear on the Dock and under "Options" click "Keep in Dock." That will put the icon back on the Dock, but now pointing to the Mail app and not an opened new message. You can then drag/drop it on the Dock where you want it, instead of where it landed when you opened Mail.

I bet Mail was open in Full Screen Mode and is opening in a Space. If you click and hold on the Mail Dock icon, or right-click on it, what options are available?
