To empty the trash means waiting for who knows how long for it to finish. It could take weeks. If anyone feels like they have a solution, please feel free to end my frustrations. Thanks.

Just don't bother wasting your time by using any "secure erase" option, and just delete the stuff normally.

Or use some of the fast Terminal commands if you feel safe doing so or using it. Mac Terminal commands are available on the web.

EDIT:
Opps, sorry Jake, I didn't notice Jake's Terminal suggestion on the second page until after posting.

My Hero

Nay, I'm not that smart. I just did some research before when I had objects in the trash that would not delete and I remembered where I had seen the solution. Good luck with it.

Sorry I'm just now getting back to you. I was so worried that I'd mess up again, I delayed following your instructions a few days to get up the nerve. Turns out, you're my new hero. I followed your instructions exactly, copied and pasted your suggested code and everything worked quickly and accurately. Trash is empty and my external drive isn't mad at me and started backing up again.

Thanks a million, man. If you're ever in Denver, I owe you dinner.

Glad it worked out for you. Now keep out of the TM backups! And you might want to look at Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper for backups that you CAN look at with Finder.
