My hard drive has a capacity of 320GB, and it shows that when I click on the main Hitachi tab, but on the "Macintosh HD" it only shows 285GB capacity. I would like to get the "Macintosh HD" to show its full storage capacity. How could I go about this? Let me know if additional information is needed and I will supply it. Problem1.png Problem2.png

One is the overall physical size while the second is the partition size. There is the Recovery partition (that is hidden), so you will never have the two things match.

ATTENTION

Your hard drive is way too full and your computer must be very, very slow. Manufacturers recommend a minimum free space of 15%, some even more up to 20%. This means a minimum free space of about 40GB. Either your hard drive is way too small or you need to strip a veritable horde of files off it urgently.

Totally agree with Harry about the amount of free space. You are driving that drive way too hard.

What does About This Mac/System Report say about the drive? I'm slightly puzzled by the amount of space missing. Raz0rEdge is technically correct in that the Recovery partition will take up some space, but I wouldn't expect it to be 35GB. More like 600-700Mb.

Formatted space is not going to be the same as RAW physical space. A 320GB drive once formatted is likely 300GB or less.

Ashwin, I have a 160GB drive that I just looked at. It's advertised as 160GB, Disk Utility says the whole drive is 160.4 GB and the formatted partition is 159.18GB. So formatting doesn't chew up that much space, certainly not 20GB. I think there is another partition on that drive somewhere.

Mine is an older spinner. The OP’s was a spunner, too. I think they are comparable.

My iMac has a 1TB SSD and the Macintosh HD partition has a capacity of 959.99GB. So 40GB lost. :)

I have to agree with Ashwin. My iMac SSD is advertised as 512 GB, yet Disk Utility tells me it's 499.12 GB.

My MBP has a 1Tb SSD and shows 1TB storage capacity. Disk Utility says there is another volume in the container for 1.81GB that I assume is the Recovery Partition. It's formatted APFS, btw. My largest bootable external drive is an SSD formatted HFS+, advertised as 960Gb, Shows 959.34GB in the one partition. There is a Recovery Partition on that drive as well, tucked into the difference between the 960 and 959.34GB. If you lost 40GB on your SSD, I would back it up and repartition it over to recover that space.

I don't know why your drives are that way and mine aren't. I also used the command line "df" and it returned 1T for the internal SSD and 959GB for the external. Again, I'm on High Sierra 10.13.3 on a MBP retina 15" Mid-2015.

My 1TB PCI-e Flash Drive shows 1TB available less what is used. The OP's drive is a spinner from the sequence number.

Nonetheless we need jellybeans to take note urgently.

Hmmm…??? For what it;s worth, the Mac OS X "Recovery HD Partition", at least on a HDD spinner, normally uses 650MB of drive space. At least that's what using the Developers menu to show invisible partitions shows.

I read at Apple that it should be 650Mb, that you need a 1Gb partition for it. I guess the other 400mb is for scratch space if you use it to install the OS.
