I tried to run Onyx today but says it couldn't run because my hd isn't journaled. I am running the latest High Sierra. I did have to do a re-instal yesterday via TM if that means anything. So My question is, how do i go about Journaling my hd? Thanks in advance.

One more thing. When my laptop wakes from sleep I have half my screen black, from left to right. but when I log in it disappears. Should I do a SMC reset? This laptop has been a headache since day of purchase. I've already had a new hd and logic board but in(under warranty).

Does your Mac have an SSD or normal hard drive? Asking to see in case your file system is APFS.

And do you have the HS version of OnyX?

Yes, I have the latest version of Onyx. I also went to disk repair and ran first aid and then to file, and it shows not being journaled.

Do I need to do a complete re-instal of High Sierra?

I have the latest version of OnyX running here (3.3.5) and High Sierra 10.13.3 with pure flash storage. (SSD)

OnyX will not run a disk structure check on a SSD that is formatted to APFS. It (OnyX) will have to be updated before you can use it. For now, only run Disk Utility First Aid if you wish to check your SSD. And if your SSD is formatted to APFS it is not journaled (in the same sense as before).

I'm sorry, but that sentence makes no sense to me. Disk Repair and First Aid is in Disk Utility, but where is this "file" that shows not being journaled? Journaling is a function of the format of the drive, and applies to HFS+ drives. IF you are running HS on an SSD system, the drive should be formatted as APFS, not HFS+ and so you should not have Journaling as an option. And that is why I asked about OnyX. The APFS version of OnyX doesn't refer to Journaling.

I assume you have the correct version of Onyx for High Sierra - Onyx usually won't work on the wrong OS for the version. As for Journaled - the message does not make sense if your SSD was converted to APFS. If your SSD was converted to APFS - which should have happened when you upgraded to High Sierra - journaling should not have been involved. APFS is not journaled as HFS+ was.

If you opted out of converting to APFS - and I am not sure if you could during installing High Sierra but I think you could have - then this could be the issue with Onyx.
Have a look at your SSD in About this Mac-> System Report -> Storage -> File system. This will tell you how it is formatted. Post back with what you find.

OnyX will not run a disk check on an APFS formatted SSD. And that's correct, no journaling. OnyX will have to be udated in order to support APFS.

I have High Sierra with Onyx and it will run a disk check on my APFS SSD.

Mine, too, Lisa. Runs exactly the same checks as Disk Utility does under First Aid.

OK.... Lisa and Jake are correct.

I was still using an older version of OnyX (before version 3.3.6) and it was not compatible with APFS. The new version I just downloaded (3.4.2) is fully compatible and will indeed run a disk check on a APFS volume.

I use OnyX so very rarely that I fell behind in updating it.

Well, have to agree w/ Lisa & Jake - just ran Onyx (version shown below) on my MBPro SSD High Sierra install w/o a problem - I was having trouble logging into a woodworking forum and hoped that maybe some cookies/caches would be cleared out - no help - Dave :)
