Ever since the leap to HS, I have noticed that my system is not as snappy as it was under Sierra. If right click and ask the Finder to "Open With", it takes a while before menu shows the applicable apps. I always see a sign that says "fetching".

That certainly is no good. My computer is eligible and has 16 GB of ram. So what could be the reason?

How long has HS been on the machine? The lookup for "Open With" has to build an inventory, which gets reused, but building it takes time the first time. In that regard it's a bit like Spotlight, it takes a while to do the inventory, and longer if you have a large external storage array.

I completely agree.. but this does it every single time that I try to open a file. For instance, if it is a video file (.mp4), I have opened many mp4 files using "open with".. So the inventory should have been already set. Am I correct? So why does it have to fetch the inventory every single time?.. It is the same file type.. Infact, it is the very same file... LOL..

Its not just that... there are other subtle things that I notice are pretty slow as compared to Sierra. Maybe my hardware is failing or I need more than 16 GB ram.

Well, if you always open that file with the same app, why not just set it and skip the Open With process altogether? In fact, if you open all .mp4 files with a that same app, you can make a mass change. Just right click on one, then Get Info and in the middle of the resulting window of information is an area labeled "Open With" and the default app listed in the box. Pick what you want to use and then clic "Change All..." and you won't have to deal with Open With again, unless you want to change it for an app.

BTW, I have 8 external drives and Open With is pretty swift, generally under a second.

Definitely not that. Sixteen GB of RAM is absolutely fine.

Maybe my hardware is failing

Possible. Why not reboot holding down Command + R; that is, boot into recovery. Then click on Utilities > Disc Utility and run First Aid on your Mac's HD. Any faults, click on Repair.

Another option is to download OnyX for macOS High Sierra from: https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html

Make sure you select the High Sierra version. Install (Admin PW needed). It checks the integrity of the HD; then from the menu, choose Automation, use the default settings and then Execute. Reboot after completion.

Using OnyX, I strongly recommend that you not change any of the defaults that the developer has set. He has configured it for the 99% condition, changing it is very risky unless you really, really, really know exactly what you (and it) are doing.

Considering that it would be the first time that I am using it, I would definitely keep everything default. Until suggested otherwise.

Since all my important data is on a backup drive and my file server, I am in two minds of doing a complete format.

IF your Mac is the one in your avatar it is showing its age!

Is an SSD installed in the Mini? HS is designed for SSD/Flash Drives.

Thanks for reminding me. I seriously need to change that info. .

To answer your question, it does have an SSD.
