What is the error message you're getting? Have you run First Aid on your hard drive from Disk Utility to see if there are any errors that show up? There could be a problem with your hard drive if the installation hangs or stops.

Your machine is eligible to install High Sierra so it must either be a hardware error or something else that's holding things up. Assuming you're downloading using WiFi, have you tried downloading from another connection if your connection is slow? (The download is approximately 11.5 GB and may be larger if you have a SSD because of the APFS conversion.)

If all else fails, what you could try is have someone download High Sierra for you and create a flash drive installer and try to install it that way. Or, if you're close to an Apple Store, have them download it for you.

Bring the MBP to a library or a place that offers free wifi and download High Sierra there. Then cancel the installation, until you get home.

Also, create a bootable USB installer before upgrading your internal drive.
