After holding back for a while I was just about to upgrade my Macbook to High Sierra when I discovered a lot of problems being caused with the third party software I use - Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 and Lightroom Ver. 4.4. Just wondered if any other Mac user on here had experienced any issues.

Can you be more specific when you say "I discovered a lot of problems with third party software"?

If you're saying that these apps in question no longer run due to the upgrade to High Sierra...this is always a possibility when upgrading the OS...and the best thing to do before upgrading the OS...is to confirm that your important user installed apps are compatible with a new OS version before doing the upgrade.

If the issue is something else...please describe.

I don't use Lightroom as I'm not into Photography, however, I can assure you that my copy of Office 2011 is alive and well running in High Sierra 10.13.1. Microsoft has stopped providing updates for 2011 but it will continue to function until Apple kills off all 32 bit applications sometime late 2018 or early 2019 when a new version of macOS is released. Also, Microsoft has just announced that they are working on Office 2019 for the Mac. Probably subscription only since MS is all about the $$$.

That doesn’t sound right? Office 365 is their subscription service?

That’s what I was thinking too. I don’t understand the need to do away with standalone versions.

They'll probably name it something else. Keep in mind that MS announced Office 2016 before they came out with Office 365. It's true that some folks would rather have a stand alone version instead of paying annually or monthly. But also remember that while Office 365 is fully configurable, Office 2016 is not. As a matter of fact, if you go to the MS Office forums you'll find that is one of the complaints users have about 2016.

Now if Apple spruces up Pages and gets it like it was before (iWork 09), I could be convinced to give up MS Office. ;)

To clear up what seems to be a misconception about Office365, the app is installed on your local machine. And you can use it with no internet connection. You just pay a monthly fee. I guess that once a month the software phones home to find out if the fee is paid, but you don't have to download the application for it to work day-to-day.
