Hi i have a problem with this macbook pro, the screen is fuzzy and unreadable and it will not boot, just shows a blank white screen. Tried running the disc fsck -fy and it came back with no errors. At a loss as to what this is a gpu failure? Having a little problem trying to download mac osx Leopard 10.5.6 and not sure if that is what is running on this macbook pro as it's a friends laptop. Can anybody help?

Which Macbook pro do you have?

Was the Macbook dropped or exposed to moisture?

Does this happen when connected to an external monitor?

Tried an smc and pram reset?

Looks to be the one from up above, a second gen 17. I have not tried an external monitor, but i will try that now. From what i was told the machine was shut down after leaving it on battery. I myself work on windows machines and usually that would signal a corrupt driver or OS. Thanks for the reply and the suggestions, i will post the results.

You do not legally download Leopard OS X.5. Go to auction sites and buy a full retail install DVD.

If it is a 2011 model Leopard will never install Leopard on it. It came with Snow Leopard OS X.6 and as a rule of thumb you cannot go to an earlier system. Spen $20 and get a copy of Snow Leopard OS X.6 from Apple Online. Do not put pirated software on a friend's computer.

You could also try to reload the os using internet recovery.

Thanks did not get that far, finally found a site that had all the info listed as to what gen it was and the osx version.

The op didn't say which os was last in installed on the Macbook. I have an early 2011 Macbook and it supports internet recovery as my machine has an up to date efi firmware version: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/25/how-to-start-up-your-mac-in-internet-recovery-mode/

Cheers for that going to leave it over night, have it running now, well i think it is hard to tell with the screen being distorted. Got the wifi key in and did hit the check icon. If this does not work i have a link to send it to dublin for gpu repair as i am almost certain thats what this is. Once again thanks for all the help. :D

Maybe I missed it...but what were the results when an external monitor was tried?
