Welcome to our forums.

High Sierra is still in beta although it is supposed to be released to the public this week. I suggest restoring your Mac from the backup you made prior to installing High Sierra.

Upgraded two machines and no problem with log in. One was a mid-2013 Air and the other was an early 2011 13" MBP.

Did you create a Time Machine backup before upgrading to High Sierra?

Sure, I would go with High Sierra as it seems fine so far for me. I'm not a power user in that I just office, mail, and safari.

Before installing the High Sierra update, create a usb installer for future use.

OK, I just saw the download ready for release at the Mac App Store. I’m in the process of downloading it right now. However, my advice still stands, use your backup and then try reinstalling High Sierra. If your 5K iMac is new, there shouldn’t be any reason for the sign on error.

The strange thing is I have been testing it since the very first beta and use a password to log on and have never had one issue with any beta with the OP's issue. That is a strange one for sure.

Same here. The only reason I haven't jumped on the initial release is Apple's recent announcement that the initial release wasn't going to fully support APFS on fusion drives. Hope they get that fixed soon.

Hi Dennis:

Yeah, it looks like he wiped the machine and reinstalled but now running into more problems. An APFS error. I still think he would be better off restoring his backup and starting over by downloading it again and installing. He may have gotten a bad download or corruption when converting HFS+ to APFS.

Folks are forgetting that if you have Flash Storage (SSD), that two things happen: 1. High Sierra download 2. Installation and APFS conversion at the same time.

That's why backups are so important.

Don't hold your breath. APFS conversion while installing is scary enough. Converting a Fusion drive all to APFS is going to take a bit of doing since APFS will actually slow down normal drives while speeding up Flash Storage.

I'm running High Sierra right now and have noticed a longer time to index the hard drive. However, once that was finished and the caches were in place, things returned to normal. My hard drive is a standard spinner so no conversion here.

Just finished the installation of High Sierra on my 2016 MBP. Took about 10 mins to download and a bout 40 mins to finish the install. Everything seems to be working fine so far..

I have read this but wanted to be sure, with the Release you can not convert to APFS on a Spinner as you call it? :D

What if you have the Gold Master from the beta program installed on a Spinner that is already APFS? Will it remove APFS or just use it?

I only have it on my late 2011 MBP right now. If all works fine there I will try the iMac later.

Actually, when I started running the various betas I converted iMacs fusion drive to APFS. The betas have run reasonably well in that setup. In fact, most file copy / duplication operations have been significantly faster when High Sierra and APFS is compared to Sierra and HFS+. I touched on this briefly in the show last night. I'll try and get the show notes up sometime tomorrow evening.

I haven't checked out what exact problems led Apple to decide that APFS would not be supported in the initial release. I can say that in at least one of the beta cycles my APFS drove would sometimes behave as though the drive had significant directory corruption. After several attempted reboots with the Option key held down the drive would appear and work fine. The several reboots was needed because the drive literally would not appear on some attempts. This is happening less under the last beta before the GM candidate but still happens more than most users would like/tolerate.

The other issue I have is that APFS sees my external HFS+ drives fine but if I boot into Sierra I cannot "see" the APFS drive in Finder.

I know how to convert my spinner to APFS using terminal but see no point in doing so. I tried it out on an external hard drive (brand new Seagate 1TB) and it was fine. The helper installer as it's called will sense if the drive is Flash Storage or a normal spinner. If it senses Flash Storage it will automatically convert everything to APFS; you have no choice there. If it senses a spinner, it will use HFS+; again no choice.

BTW, I do not recommend anyone to try doing the conversion on a spinner using terminal unless they know what they're doing. The terminal conversion method will erase the drive and then convert it. In which case, you don't want to do the conversion on a working drive with data since Time Machine will not restore to a APFS drive with a backup made on a HFS+ drive.

What if you have the Gold Master from the beta program installed on a Spinner that is already APFS? Will it remove APFS or just use it?

I would think it will just go ahead and use it as is and not change it back to HFS+.
