Mouse and Keyboard not detected at login

I was setting up encryption on my Mac mini. I was away from the machine and the lock screen had kicked in.

I found that my curser wouldn't move nor could I tab using my keyboard. Both devices are apple manufactured. I had to use a wired mouse and keyboard to get past the login screen, I then found that my apple mouse and keyboard started working???
Why is this - Both are fully charged.

Any suggestions please (all was Ok before I started the encryption process)?

Do they both work now that encryption is completed? What you experienced is quite normal while the encryption process was ongoing.

No encryption is still ongoing. So it's a matter of waiting then?

Yes. Let us know when your hard drive has completely been encrypted. Then you will need to reboot and your wireless mouse and keyboard should return to normal. Let us know if it doesn't.

When I went to bed last night it said 11 hours to completion. Now it's saying 7 hours - I've encrypted large disks before, why on earth is it taking so long?

How large is the disk and did you run First Aid on the disk prior to the encryption process?

1TB. No I didn't run first aid - I looked up the encryption process and there was no mention of the need

A 1TB drive should encrypt fairly fast assuming you are using Filevault to do the encryption. When a drive of 1TB takes that long to encrypt, it's possible there are drive errors or bad blocks. I would stop the encryption process, dismount the drive and use Disk Utility from recovery to check the drive for errors. Let us know.

Yes I'm using filevault, I only purchased the machine, new, just over a week ago, so I'd be surprised if there are drive errors.
I have tried to stop the process but just get a message saying wait until the encryption process has completed - if you know of another way to stop encryption I'll try it

Yeah, I agree with you. A brand new Mac Mini (by the way a new Mac Mini is actually a 2014 model) with new drive should not be displaying errors. Do you know if that hard drive is actually a fusion drive or is it a pure spinning hard drive. That model also came with an optional SSD.

Either way, it should never take that long to encrypt the drive. Something is not right. Also, I know of no other way to stop the encryption.

Another question: Did you buy the Mini direct from Apple or some other third party supplier?

Sorry but I don't know the drive type - I bought it from a third party. I contacted Apple support last night and they said this was normal behaviour (which I think is nonsense).
One good bit of news is that it is encrypting - this morning it reports three hours to go and the progress bar has moved, so something is happening

OK, let us know when the drive has been fully encrypted. Since you purchased the machine from a third party we really do not know the condition of the hard drive or for that matter, what drive is in the machine. After the encryption is over, click on the Apple menu (upper left corner), select "About This Mac", "More Info", and select storage. That will tell you what's installed in the Mini.
