You may want to consider a upgrading to a SSD and 8GB memory before upgrading your MacOS.

I do not know what year your Macbook is but I had a old 2010 Macbook that had been upgraded with a non-Apple 250GB SSD (Crucial MX100) and upgraded to 8GB of PNY Memory. I ran Yosemite, El Capitan, and Sierra on it with no problems and the 2010 Macbook ran very well.

Unless you supply full details vmax can't help much.

Leopard OS X.5 was released in 2007, and the Mac needs certain specs to update to what you are after. Snow Leopard OS X.6 is also too old to receive security updates from Apple and many banks etc will not allow customers access because of the age of the browser.
