Only right click behaviour

I have a MacBook Pro with a misbehaving keyboard and trackpad. So I'm using an external keyboard and mouse. The mouse was exhibiting only right click behaviour - I couldn't get a single regular left click out of it. However, after deleting the following plists:
com.apple.AppleMultitouchMouse.plist
com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist
com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist
com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist
and rebooting, everything went back to normal with the mouse. Left and right clicks as exppected. After a few hours however, things went back to only right clicks. Besides deleting these plists more than once a day, how can I resolve this?

Very hard to say without exact model and operating system details. Is this an Apple external mouse and keyboard?

The plot thickens... this morning when I woke it up (opened the lid), the behaviour has returned to normal.
Specs:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)
(And I know this is a little unnecessary, but from system report):

So no, not an apple mouse, regular run of the mill optical USB mouse.

Thanks for the reply, I know this is a 1 in a million behaviour, so hard to diagnose. Oh and btw, I have trackpad disabled when USB mouse plugged in via accessibility in sys pref.

Any chance you are on Snow Leopard OS X.6? Also I hate version 1.0 of any software.

I haven't seen this behaviour come back since, but I reckon it might come back after a reboot (because that's what retriggered it previously)... I'll post again if that does happen, but I guess for now things are OK.

I spoke too soon, it's back! While using yesterday (just after I posted actually) it came back after I had unplugged the mouse, then plugged it back in. It seems if I wait a few hours with the mouse in, it starts functioning as it should, but taking the mouse in and out brings back right click only. Any ideas folks? Thanks.

Drivers for non Apple mice can be a problem Ancient, and Pixart do not seem too keen on supplying drivers for older products.

Are both connected directly to the MBP, and not through a hub? Are you using any of the so called cleaning software such as Mackeeper, CleanMyMac, etc?

Yup, spend at least $20.00 and buy a new USB mouse, and I'd suggest a supported brand like Logitech or Microsoft, but do check the specs and Mac compatibility. A very few models don't work with Macs.

I have this behaviour since years. It affects Apple mouse and built in trackpad. I had the issue with different MacBook Models. The latest ist a 2016 MacBook Pro mit touchbar. It was quiet in the last month, but after the latest upgrade to 10.14.1 I'll get the problem all the times. Right now, it works if I just reboot the computer. But it is very annoying. Also tried to delete the above prefs, but did not change anything.

Yes. It is definitely not a hardwar issue. I also had it with different Macbooks

I've had a 2012 MBP, 2016 and 2017 MBP's and none of them have presented this issue across a bunch of different OS'. I'm currently on macOS High Sierra. I've used the built-in trackpad and both Magic Mouse 1 and 2.

Please don't delete random files without knowing what the consequences are.

Have you tried resetting the SMC/PRAM? Have you run the machine in Safe Mode?
