I'm working with a new (old) computer. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and am trying to upgrade to El Capitan now. At the app store, on the page for downloading to El Capitan, when I click on "get" nothing happens. Also, when I try to sign into the Apple support communities, nothing happens. The page just hangs.

I've run a diagnostic with the disk utility but there doesn't seem to be any problem.

Is there a problem with Safari? I'm on Safari 5.0.5 here. Can I upgrade beyond that? How?

I have not used OS 10.6.8 for years and am having are hard time trying to remember how this OS works.

Thanks for any ideas.

Have you already purchased El Capitan?
Do you make a USB installer for El Capitan?
Did you sign into the Mac App Store, and did you look under Purchased for El Capitan?
Does the Mac support El Capitan?

I followed the links to downloading El Capitan from a previous OS. There was no option to sign into the Mac App Store, nor to purchase El Capitan. According to the specs this Mac supports El Capitan.

1) are you signed in to the Mac App Store? In the menu bar under Store.
2) if you already purchased El Capitan for a different Mac, it will show on the Purchased page in the Mac App Store.
3) What are the specs for your Mac?

@suelange1

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

Member ferrarr has spelt out the steps required.

The key is to sign in to the App Store on your Mac using your own Apple ID.

The link below tells you which Mac are eligible for El Capitan, but more importantly, how to get it if your Mac won't support macOS Sierra and even if you have never downloaded El Capitan before.

Look under the Heading: "How to get El Capitan" and click on the link included in the statement "If your Mac doesn't support Sierra, or you're using Snow Leopard and would like to upgrade to Sierra, you can get El Capitan from the App Store."
