After installing Sierra I have been getting the repeated message "Disk Not Ejected Properly" for my G-Drive which I use for my Time Machine. I have checked and I am backing up successfully. I have run Disk Utility and OnyX and the drive appears to be working ok. I suspect that when the computer sleeps the G-Drive is somehow not responding when TM wants to do another incremental backup. I went into Energy Saver and shut off the command "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" but I'm still getting many notices of "Disk Not Ejected Properly" whenever I'm not actively on the machine.

Any thoughts as to what I might change to stop what I believe to be a false message?

Any help will be appreciated.

This is very likely not a Sierra issue. Usually this message is encountered when an external drive is not "ejected" properly before being disconnected. The external drives icon needs to be dragged to the trash first.

Maybe you can tell us how this external drive is connected to (I'm assuming) your 2011 21.5" iMac? And what is usually your procedure when you finish with the computer each time you use it...or finish for the day?

Nick,
Thanks for the prompt reply. My G-Disk is connected via Firewire 800 and has operated wo/this message for the past 5 years. There have been few occasions that required me to detach the drive and I probably haven't done so in the past 6 months. When I'm done with the computer I just leave it and let it go to sleep. I might do a shut down and cold boot every 3-4 weeks. I have never gotten this message regarding the G-Drive until after I updated to Sierra. That's why I'm thinking Sierra changed a setting that triggers this warning message. But, maybe not. I'm at a loss as to how to suppress this.

Unfortunately you're not alone and it's not too uncommon a problem and has been for a while for some.

No solid solution that I know of or could see. Have a look:

I am a bit surprised to read it's happening with a G-Disk and connected via Firewire 800.

EDIT:
I'm wondering if doing the old reset fixes might fix the problem:

Best advice in my book is format the drive, and clone your backup using CarbonCpyCloner or SuperDuper. This also has the advantage of the drive being bootable in case of emergency. You can simply onnect as often as you wish, for mine weekly, and use the 'smart copy' feature to simply update the clone by making changes that has occurred that past week.

I have concerns about the reliability of the G-Drive backups but I have checked the TM backups and they are ok. Over 6 months ago I installed a second HD and use CCC for a second backup. The system had no problems for 4-5 months until I did the recent Sierra install.
