Unable to move email to trash in Mail

In trying to clear the Trash Box in Mail, using my usual process of "Select All", "Delete", "Select All" again for those not cleared initially, and "Delete" again which usually clears the remaining emails.

This time, I had a number "blocked", with the warning message of "The file “25139.emlx” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file."

I have managed to clear the others which were blocked by using "Delete" in the dropdown menu, rather from the toolbar, but there still remains the one message causing the warning message.

The odd thing is that this email contains no more than my own email address, as it would if I was sending to someone else, and the Subject of "Re: Meeting again". I know what that refers to and to whom it was sent, but the original was a chain of correspondence with 3 other people and my replies, none of which appear in this "ghost"!

Any suggestions on how to eradicate it will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Try selecting your Mailboxes and use the Mail's "Rebuild" option and see if that doesn't fix things.

PS: If you're using any AV software, even ClamXav, and they "delete" any offending or suspicious message, you can end up with the same problem you have.
Just saying… and in case… ;)

Why not Mailbox > Delete Erased Items > Erase and if still there do a reboot with Mail open?

If no joy Shift-Option held whilst emptying Trash works, so try with the 'Erase' in Mail.

Mail maintains a database that doesn't contain any of your e-mail messages, but which contains information about where those messages are located on your hard drive and what their state is. It is sometimes called the "envelope database." You need to rebuild the envelope database to get things back to normal. (Don't worry, this is easy to do, and completely safe.)

Unfortunately, you didn't say which version of OS X you are running. Rebuilding the envelope database is a bit different for each version of OS X.

Under El Capitan, this is how you do it:

- Quit Mail.
- Go to your user Library folder by holding down the Option key in the Finder, and then choosing: Go menu --> Library
- In ~/Library/Mail/V3/MailData, move any file that begins with “Envelope Index” to your desktop, such as:

Envelope-Index
Envelope-Index-shm
Envelope-Index-wal

Launch Mail and new Envelope Index files will be created. This can take a long time if there are a lot of archived e-mail messages to go through.

Mail should be back to normal after this.

If you are using a different version of OS X, let me know and I'll tell you how to rebuild the envelope database for that version.

USING Mail's Rebuild to remove .emix mail

Try selecting your Mailboxes and use the Mail's "Rebuild" option and see if that doesn't fix things.

Hey great!!!

An almost two year old hint still produced results as the site heads toward some dubious unknown end.

Anyway, glad to hear it worked.

Maybe, but at some of those other sites. Besides I have my anti-zombie software running so I should be OK. I hope.

And BTW: I hope your comment wasn't referring to any poster here…??? Especially a brand new member… ;D :Smirk:

This worked for me. Thanks so much Randy. It was driving me crazy!

And speaking of Randy, I haven't noticed any of his good posts for a while and I hope he's still with us.

The reports of my death are merely the wishful thinking of those who know me well.

I have a new Web page that I created for Macintosh users here:

Forgive me, but I'm a busy attorney by day. Most evenings too. I've had to cut back on some of my extracurriculars.

A relief to know and I'll have to checkout your new website.

I understand that most good lawyers are kept very busy in the US. :Smirk:

Yes. And when they die, they go into a 12 foot grave - because deep down, they are really nice people.
