Annoying dictionary popup Yosemite MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

What the heck is this ridiculously annoying dictionary popup every time I mouse over and highlight a word, or paragraph - when simply trying to cut and paste?????

Brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with Yosemite and it's beyond annoying.

I tried hide dictionary, quit dictionary, no joy.

I cut/paste a lot and this stupid annoying popup is stealing a lot of time out of my day.

I have 2 questions:

1: How do I get rid of this piece of junk dictionary altogether?

2: I want the name and address of the idiot who thought this was a good idea so I can show him my new baseball bat!

Right... There was never a dictionary pop up until we upgraded to Yosemite recently.

Now, in chrome if I just hover over or near a word in preparation to highlight b4 cutting, a yellow box about 1/4" high and as long as the word appears and immediately a larger 3 x 3 or so box pops up with a dopy dictionary, wiki tabs.

Like right now if I mouse over your name (trackpad) Nick, a dictionary, thesaurus and at times another tab display. Very annoying.

In gmail is where I notice it mostly.

I have another older MacBook, upgraded os, no dopey dictionary popup.

I have no idea where it's coming from but when it's open, if I click anywhere on that 3 x 3 gray box, a DICTIONARY tab appears where it'll usually indicate current app being used like text edit, browser type, etc,.

If I click THAT "tab" I see

Somehow it got awakened from wherever it should have stayed and it's the most annoying thing I've ever run across.

A real pain.

Nice try but I thought of that already and it's DEFINITELY yosemite

If one tries to delete that APPLE app, message is:

"“Dictionary” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS*X."

Who's ranting?

I've been working with computers since the 70s when a 10MB drive was the size of a Maytag washer.

This is the first problem ever with a Mac.

So if you're not going to help please refrain from acting the fool.

Well, I haven't noticed any other members posting about any such complaint and if you think it's all OS X Yosemite's fault, may I suggest you check and read this and I'm surprised you missed it with all your many years of Mac computer use:

Go into Applications > Dictionary and double click to open. Dictionary Preferences gives a list of dictionaries one can choose from. Suggest you try deselecting the lot of them and see if that helps your problem.

You can't deselect them all.

There's only one selected and it won't deselect.

It's not the Apple built in dictionary that's popping up but something else that you have installed. You need to find out what it is that you've installed (perhaps accidentally or a tag on to something else you downloaded or installed).

And it's not the auto correction mentioned by member "pm-r" above because it doesn't act that way....

And whatever it is, it's not a part of Yosemite nor was it installed by Yosemite. Check your start up items by going to System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items. If you see something here, click the small lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, select the item and hit the minus button to remove it.

Also see above the reply from "cradom" if you use the trackpad.

Is this only happening in web browsers? If so, download and run Malwarebytes. I think there is a piece of malware that I've seen that behaves this way.

If it is happening somewhere other than a web browser I'm not sure what the problem is.

In an earlier part of this thread I explained that if I try to delete it, an error message reads
"“Dictionary” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS*X.""

And, if I right click the dictionary window I clearly see

Oh - I am only using a track pad.

It also happens in text edit

It doesn't happen in Safari, so I'll just use that from now on.

Does this article describe what you are seeing? I don't remember if these tool tips were still around in Yosemite but it's the only thing that comes to mind that hasn't been tried.
