I've just ordered a new MacBook Pro to replace my aging Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz. It comes with OS X Yosemite loaded. Is it a good idea to load the upgrade for El Capitan straight away? I don't have any old applications to load, but I will be purchasing MS Office 2016 for Mac.

If it's a brand new MacBook Pro…it really should come with El Capitan already installed.

I don't disbelieve anyone; I'm just astonished that a brand new Mac of any model should ship with Yosemite. I ordered a new iMac in November 2015 and it shipped with El Capitan (10.11.2, I think; but could have been 10.11.1). This was a direct on-line purchase from Apple.

I mean, El Capitan was launched when; September/October 2015?

Anyway, like others, I thoroughly recommend upgrading to El Capitan.

I just purchased a iMac (refurbished) with 10.11.1 installed. I ran the power ON setup, it would not accept my mac address, and wanted a email, I went through all my emails until it accepted one from gmail.com. Now I cannot access my mac email (used for 15 plus years) and my icloud account is tied to a gmail.com address so I cannot get email any more.

Please start a new thread. Your issue is not related to this thread.

Thanks,

Call Apple. They can't mess with the new account, but may be able to help you get back to whatever email address you had with them.

Just to update my original post. The Macbook Pro that had OS X Yosemite loaded was supplied by COSTCO Online, but when I tried to order, their website went down and the order did not go through, even though they took the payment off my VISA. It was 48 Hrs of hassle trying to sort the problem with COSTCO customer services, and in the end I cancelled and got a refund.

I went out the following day and bought a Macbook from an official Apple dealer c/w OS X El Capitan, which also has the correct British keyboard (I'm in the UK). So I'm really happy not to have ordered from COSTCO. They were a slightly better price, but sounds as though they had got a batch of older Macs. :)
