Hello all.

I recently updated my MacBook Pro (Early 2011) to Yosemite 10.10.5 and just noticed that Java is missing from System Preferences. It used to be next to Flash Player.

Here is the sequence of events:
Oct 22, 2015 -
#1 Updated to Java 8 update 65 via System Preferences > Java Icon > Java Control Panel. (This went OK and is recorded in System Information > Installations.)

#2 Upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3,
then applied Software Updated 10.10.5
and Security Update 2015-004 1.0

I don’t know exactly when the Java icon (that opens Java Control Panel) went missing from System Preferences. Does anyone know what the problem is and what I should do. Thanks in advance.

Did you do a clean upgrade to Yosemite? That is, a full reformat? if so, that's when Java went away. Java has so many security holes in it you shouldn't be running it anyway, but if you want back, reinstall it.

I upgraded on top of Mountain Lion. i.e. not a clean install. Also, System Information shows that Java 8u65 is installed.

Yep, I usually have Java disabled due to security holes as you said. I'm wondering if I should just uninstall it since I can't tell you what I need it for. Anyone have advice on the pros/cons to uninstall it?

Thanks for your quick response.

Do you play Minecraft? You need Java. Other applications use it too.
Uninstall it and see what wont run, if anything. If you do need it, reinstall it.

I don't play Minecraft... or any other games on the computer... not that I have anything against that sort of play. ;P

I found uninstall instructions at https://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml

I'm not experienced executing terminal commands. Should it be fairly safe to follow these directions?

Thanks, MacInWin and cradom. I went ahead and issued the two sudo commands. In the process, I was surprised to receive a lecture. As I said, my first time. But no errors, so I suppose it'll all good.

Anyway... so far things look OK... and I did take a backup before uninstalling Java just in case.

BTW... it later occured to me that the Java entry in System Information > Installations only shows when it was installed and does not indicate that Java is currently installed. Because I still see all the Java entries there.

Cheers!
