Hey guys. A folder from my OS seems to have disappeared.

I created a folder called "Logic Selection" with a selection of all my favourite logic sounds in. I then created a shortcut to this folder on the left hand column of the finder window.

I recently deleted the shortcut by accident (dragged it off the finder). I thought I would simply search for the folder and drag it into the side column of the finder window again to reproduce the shortcut, but when I searched for the name of the folder I could not find it anywhere.

When I search for one of the sub folders or individual sample files in this "Logic Selection" parent folder I can not find anything either.
Moreover, when I checked for the shortcut in my TimeMachine backup it was not there.

Has anyone got any suggestions of what might have happened to it or how it might track it (via Terminal etc)?

Many thanks

Hi Josh

Just to get things straight in my own mind — you created a Folder; where eg the Desktop, in Documents etc. This could become important. Then, you dragged the Folder into the side column of Finder, right. This creates an alias as you correctly said. The alias only works as long as the original Folder remains in the same location from which it was dragged. You didn't by any chance relocate it?

Next; when you say you accidentally deleted the shortcut, it was literally drag it out? No question of Cmd + Drag or any other combination of Drag + ? As you say, and I've just tested this 3 or 4 times, a simple drag out of the side column results in a "whoosh" and it's gone, but the original Folder stays put.

Even if you had actually deleted it, it should be in Trash. Clearly not in your case.

When you opened Time Machine, rather than seeking the alias, did you attempt to find the Folder in its original location? Because even if the alias was not there, the Folder should be.

As regards searching: Templeton's "Find Any File" and/or "Easy Find" app are, in my simple view, a lot better than Spotlight.

If all else fails, you may need to resort to one of the data recovery programmes. But before that, can you just confirm what I presume you did and comment on things like moving the Folder, how you deleted the alias and whether TM can locate the Folder rather than the alias. Of course it's best if you remembered where it was originally. Hope it wasn't the Desktop.

Good for you Josh. Well done. Happy ending.

I wonder how on earth it got there; but hey, you found it.
