My iMAC is running very slow and that **** beach ball never stops spinning. I've learned how to stop the chronic spinning.
I have MAC Cleaner and was notified that the memory was at a critical low. I'm no techie so I am clueless on the hardware. I have no idea how much RAM I need. Do I buy it and where should I purchase it...Radio Shack? How do I install it? OR should I download a RAM opitimizer?
This is how much memory I have: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

I would appreciate any help....

First of all get rid of the "Mac Cleaner". Almost all of these "cleaner" apps are garbage! In many cases they do more harm than good.

"Clueless"...maybe!;) I can't remember the last time I heard someone say they purchased ram for a Mac from Radio Shack.

How do I install it?

Good places to purchase ram are:

If I got your iMac model correct. It can be upgraded to 6gig of ram. But. The 6gig ram upgrade is sort of expensive (price/gig)…especially compared to the current value of a 2007 iMac. You would be better off with the 4gig ram upgrade.

As far as installing it. Easy. Remove two screws on the bottom area of the display. Pop out the old ram. Pop in the new ram. Reinstall the plate held in with the two screws.:)

OWC (macsales). Ifixit.com. Or You Tube will all have either videos or procedures with photos how to do it. It is VERY easy!:)

OR should I download a RAM optimizer?

For-get-it!;)

I'd agree with what Nick has said, and my wife uses my old 2007 24" iMac with SL and it does have 6GB RAM, but the needed 4GB modules are around the $150 mark these days which is about $100 more than a pair of 2GB chips will cost. Just not really wort it for an extra 2GB.

But you can sure have a look and see what possibly excessive stuff is running with Activity Monitor and get your iMac trimmed as efficiently as possible.

Thank you I will check out the Activity Monitor and get rid of MAC cleaner. I appreciate the help.

Thanks Nick. I don't think I can afford new RAM. No job No Ram. I going to clean my iMAC. Buying this iMAC was probably the best purchase I made in 2007. It's amazing how time goes by but my iMAC remains the same...perfect.

A 4gig ram upgrade for your iMac (2 x 2gig) seems to have gone down in price since I last checked. It's currently only $39.99. The 6gig ram upgrade (1 x 2gig and 1 x 4gig) actually seems to have gone up in price ($125):

With a 4gig ram upgrade I bet that things would feel snappier. But I also realize that funds can be tight.

I had a similar question a short time ago. I had 4gb and wanted to upgrade. I bought 2 8gb sticks from macsales for $129. I called macsales and the told me I could go to 32gb. Seems to be working better, and the beachball seems to be gone since I upgraded to El Capitan today.

Next question after getting rid of any Mac Cleaners, are you running antivirus software at all?
