Do you have a backup you can restore, always wise to backup before a major upgrade.

When you reinstalled El Capitan, do you do this over the top of the failed update or did your erase then install?

I tried reinstall over and still had problems. I then erased Hard drive and restored from a clone, unplugged all external Hardware, and closed all apps and background apps, reinstalled same problem. ElCapitan runs great on my old faithful 2007 MBP. I'm not real good with terminal - i'm a 68 year old so I didn't grow up with stuff. But i can muddle through.

Sounds to me like there might be a problem with the hard drive. It could be as simple as some directory structure issues or it could be a failing drive.

When you boot into the recovery partition (command R) run Disk Utility and have it attempt to verify and repair the drive. Select the drive in the list at the left and choose First Aid and follow the on screen prompts.

Please do not double post. One thread will suffice and as you can see you were given an answer in your first post. We combined your posts together here.

Food for thought! if I installed El Capitan on my clone to determine if it will boot afterwards - would it help me determine if its a programing problem or a hard drive problem?

You young fellahs I don't know. It always is a wise move to Verify the hard drive before doing any major upgrade.

Were you by chance running a Beta version prior to the General Release? El Capitan downloads and installs beautifully so I guess the problem is with the drive or how fast your network connection works. Some folk Down Under have had to use a 24+ hour download time which can cause corruption.

Well latest update. I ran Disc warrior on my clone drive first then started from clone (Western digital 7200 RPM 2TB 800Fire wire) and installed El Capitan to it --Same problem! I beginning to think its in an extension .Kext that won't load. Some others having same problem have removed some and solved the problem. I don't think i'm savvy enough to mess with my Library/Extension Folder. Although I might give it a try on my clone first, to see if I can figure it out.
