El Capitan Public Beta download

I understand that the Public Beta for El Capitan is out. I signed up for the beta a couple of weeks ago and understood that I would be notified by email when and where to get it. Does it take a while for all the emails to go out or do I assume that somehow I didn't get on the list after all?

I did wonder what email address they would use to contact me as my Apple ID is on old address that just disappears into the ether, though I added a valid secondary email address. Could that be the issue?

Did you read the thread in our "Apple Rumors and Reports" forum? Read the thread and follow the download link given to download the public beta of "El Capitan". Make sure you understand the ramifications of installing a public beta. And, we can not stress how important it is to make a Time Machine backup and clone backup first.

I had not seen that thread, but have now read it. I'm aware of the issues and will be installing it on an external drive. Thanks for the pointer.

Followed the link in the other forum to the signup page and that is the same page I signed up on a couple of weeks ago. I still wonder if my old email address as my Apple ID is the issue. The old address won't bounce back so no one will know I didn't get it. Maybe I should get a new ID?

Sounds like an easy fix, but sad to say no go. According to that link the only way to change my primary email address which is the email they will try to contact me through, is to change my Apple ID. I've read of the hassle that can cause with apps and even the OS not knowing about the new ID and refusing to update etc. Sure don't know why they can't just have a "contact email address" that can be changed if the exist one goes away. Even the two step verification isn't available to me because I don't have a smart phone. Grrr......... How short sighted can they be?

Csmac have you tried sending an email to your old email address? Just to check if it works. I assume that this email address and password are your current Apple ID. If you use the same ID for iTunes, iChat, App Store, Find My Computer etc then it must be active. Do you have an iCloud email address at all?

If you read back to the beginning of this thread, the old email DOES NOT WORK. It doesn't bounce back, just disappears. It's an old dial-up account that I closed some years ago. The apple support says just to change the email address, which changes the Apple ID then go to all the places like iTunes, App Store etc that has the old ID and change it, but, and this is the gotcha, they don't say that all your stuff will now accept the new ID the same as the old and the biggest issue is that the OS is installed with the old ID so now it won't update because of a non-matching ID. The fix for that is to wipe and reinstall. Not what I want to do. Seems to me that the best fix is to create a new ID and use that for everything going forward and use the old one only when necessary to work with older stuff.

Where are you getting that info?

They don't say all the stuff will now accept the new ID because it is not really a "new" AppleID. It is still the same (original) account with an updated email address / login.

It is only a new AppleID in the sense that the login / email has been updated. The account and everything owned by that account has not changed.

Once you update the email / login of your AppleID, the old login will no longer be valid. You will not be able to update anything with the old login because it no longer exists. Everything associated with that account now belongs to the new login.

The fix is signing out of the wrong AppleID and signing in with the correct ID.
Exactly the same as you are talking about if you actually get a second AppleID account.
You would be required to input the correct AppleID each time based on which account owned what rather than having a single ID.

Now whether Apple will permit you to change the email without confirmation from the original email address associated with the account. I don't know. None of us that have the old .mac email addresses are permitted to change our primary email on our accounts.

Thanks for the info on the new email address process. I was hoping that was the case, but it was not explained in nearly that detail. Guess I'm a little gun shy from all the horror stories I've read.

I was thinking of the presently installed OS, not the process in installation. I've read on this forum that people buying a used Mac are told that the inability to update because they didn't know the original owner's password could only be fixed by wipe and reinstall with the new owner's ID. Are you saying there is a way around that?

No, I'm not saying anything of the kind.

You have not told us you have someone else's AppleID. You told us you have your own AppleID. And, from what you have told us, you still have the login/password for that ID.

There is no comparison between updating your own AppleID vs. someone that has no clue as to what a previous owner's AppleID may be.

You go online, login to your existing AppleID and update it - here.
After updating it, then you would have to go around and update it in the App Store, iTunes, etc.

If you don't remember that old email address and the password for that AppleID, then indeed, you are up the creek without a paddle.

Ok, guess I misunderstood the update thing on the Apple ID. When the App Store, for instance, asks for my Apple ID I enter the email and password. To me the ID is the email address, but if I understand what you're saying, that is only the interface, that the real ID is the other data that goes with that email address so if I want to update something that needs me to login with my ID the software will look past the login email "ID" and see that I am the same person.

My example of a used Mac was based on the understanding that the login email address was the ID, but apparently that is not the case, correct?
