I have created a custom CUPS backend for my printing system, and it seems to work, but apple can't see it.

I used lpadmin -p "Printername" -E -v printername:/tmp -D "description"

This added it to CUPS, but my mac (running the latest version of Yosemite) doesn't recognize any installed printer.

I can see the printer under my CUPS configuration, but how do I get the OS to realize it is there? What could be the problem?

I don't think it is a sandboxing issue. My permissions are all set correctly, and it only accesses allowed locations. I even tried relaxing sandboxing. How does OSX see new printers? Does it read from the CUPS config?

Isn't it a "Bonjour" thing, sort of like a new device or a new neighbour waving a flag and announcing "I'm here".

Then one is supposed to acknowledge the fact and do something, like adding a new printer so that the OS knows it's supposed to become a welcome new member of the OS and shows up in the Print & Fax System Prefs and the associated software and files.

That's just my guess… ;)
