delete mail permanently

Is there a simple way to permanently delete emails without having to delete them, then go into deleted items and delete again? Sent items are the same, you delete and then have to delete a second time in deleted items folder. In Windows, shift/del would do this, but cannot find a solution on my mac.

If you want to do this routinely, then simply change your preferences so the Trash is auto-emptied when you quit Mail.

Previously, you could bypass the Trash by using OPTION-DELETE (or maybe it was OPTION-COMMAND-DELETE), but that has been mysteriously removed.

Too bad they removed it. I don't want trash to auto empty so I guess I'm stuck with deleting twice. Thanks

Didn't actually need it that much to remember, but having just checked - [option] [delete] works for me - message is gone and nothing in the Mail Trash

Seriously dude? Maybe he just has a need for some emails to go away immediately but prefers to keep trash around otherwise for 30 days just in case. I know I've had to fish something out of my trash a few days after deleting it. It's what the trash is for.

OK, I am about ready to start tearing out some hair. Mail is driving me nuts.

I spent about two hours yesterday cleaning out my main e-mail box. Yes, I know, I've been bad and allowed about 2500 e-mails to build up there. I faithfully deleted them and before I could shut down and call it a night, they all re-appeared. All of them.

I repeated the task, this time pretty PO'd, so I just marked them as all read, right clicked, hit delete, they disappeared and within a few seconds, they all reappeared again.

I had dragged dozens of them to a folder I call Keepers. I opened that folder and it was empty. All had migrated back into the general mail box.

1) WTH is going on? Why won't they stay deleted?

2) Why can't I drag and drop an e-mail I need to keep to another folder and have it stay there.

I am running a late 2011 MacBook Air using 10.9.5 Mavericks. (I know....I need to update too....and my iMac upstairs is still running Mountain Lion...and I suppose I need to update that too....but that's a clean install and another topic for another day ;-)

So what's up with my mail?

Option-Delete

Doesn't work anymore in Yosemite.

Just tried Option-Del in 10.11.3, El Capitan, and it zaps the message just like Cmd-X used to in 10.8.

Hey Harry!

Weather's great! I should asterisk that.

We broke a record for Atlanta area temperatures yesterday. 85! Oldest record, decades ago, was 82. But I think the north eastern area is due some more snow later this week.

95 is hot, Harry. It gets there pretty often here but not until June. Makes power bills fun, eh? Hope all is well with you!

You have to deleted twice to delete them permanently, because you may delete something by mistakenly.
