Questions concerning Yosemite and a potential RAID 0 transition

I'm considering converting the two 1TB HDDs in my Mac Mini (2012) to a RAID 0 configuration. If I do this it is my understanding that I must erase all of the data on the drives (for my situation it would only be the first HDD as the second HDD possesses no data yet).

Could I use Carbon Copy Cloner (or similar program), clone the current HDD, and then use CCC to import that image to the new RAID 0 drive setup?

Thanks for the direction and for any other tips that might help. I am running the latest build of Yosemite (non-Server).

I just don't believe I'll ever use the second HDD as 1TB should be sufficient for all of my local storage/data needs. At this point it is somewhat superfluous and if I could derive some benefit speed-wise as I don't have an SSD, it seems to make sense to pursue this path?

Closer than you think.

Yes, CCC will do this providing you mark the clone as bootable.

But if you don't think you need more than 1TB why not use RAID 1. This way you will survive a drive failure, whereas you wouldn't with RAID 0.

I don't imagine the I/O would be any better or worse RAID1 or RAID0 as they are basic 7200RPM stat drives.

Thanks for the input.

The HDD speed in that vintage Mini is actually 5400. Does that make a difference as it relates to your comment about the I/O?

I wouldn't anticipate any significant I/O either way.
