I frequently receive notification of new mail, but when I check, I find that the notification is for previous received and read email. My IP tells me this is a OS or programme fault and not theirs. Would you agree with that statement? If not, what can I do to prevent this.

Hi McBie
OSX 10.8.5 Mail Version 6.6 (1510)

Sorry to have failed to provide above, in the process of upgrading personal and computer profiles.
Not sure if I do understand what you mean with your by-line …"The problem is your attitude towards the problem. You understand ?"
Not what I'm accustomed to reading on the forums.
Tks anyway, Dewi

Are the duplicate messages in all mail accounts or just in one ?
Is that account an IMAP account or a POP account .

Cheers ... McBie

PS. The " problem " sentence is in my signature, not in the main part of the mail. That sentence is based on over 30 years of experience with IT. :)

Hi MvBie,

To answer your question honestly, I'm not sure if the situation (let's not use the word 'problem'!) is with both my mail accounts, or just one, I'll try to pay attention next time I get a false mail notification. Meantime, let's just say it's with one mail account, if you have an answer to the question. Solve one mail account, then the second will follow.
Dewi
PS.If you have 30 yrs experience with IT, then you must fit my age bracket!:) You call it your signature,I call it your 'by-line'. Whatever, initial reaction could be a negative one.

Hi again McBee,

One unanswered question - it's a POP account.

Maybe just change it sometime to something simpler like Problem = PEBKAC. But I thought it was pretty good as is. ;)

And congrats on your 30 years of experience with IT. That is a long time. :D

This forum has gone completely off topic. When you advised of your 30 year IT experience McBee, I figured you'd be able to answer the question I posed in my first forum. But that did not happen, if you or anyone is able to help solve this 'problem', it would be much appreciated. Tks. Dewi

I hardly ever used OSX 10.8.5 Mail Version 6.6 so I don't have an answer for you, but in Mavericks and it's Mail with my POP accounts, notifications just gives me a notice or maybe a summary notice of x # of so many emails and then just disappears like a smiling Cheshire cat. There are no specific notifications nor any left in my Notifications list. At least none that I've ever seen.

I hope that helps and I've just been doing Mac help for almost 25 years, so I've got lots to learn still. I wish things would stay still for a bit so I could catch up.

So now back to your topic… ;) :D

EDIT: Hey, I just took a short break, and I have one email message waiting and my Notification list shows that specific message listed. Then when I click the notification, it brings up my Mail message window and the notification disappears.

I don't know if that helps your situation or not. Anyway… that's what happens here.

Thanks pm-r. What you describe is normal mail behaviour for me also, the phenomina I describe has only started a couple of months ago. If I may introduce a different question on this thread, a few weeks ago, one of the replies listed all the different OS names (e.g. Maverick) against the OS version, do you have that info? As you saw my OSX is 10.8.5, but I have no idea what it's called and I can't seem to find it in About this Mac.

Hi Dewi, that's strange that the problem just started as I did some searching on Mac mountain lion Mail Notifications problem and was going to post that maybe your ISP was correct.

It seems that many had goofy problems with Notifications with OS X 10.5.x when it was first introduced, but that doesn't make much sense if your problem just started.

I don't know what to suggest.

As for your OS X versions, and a suggestion my son told me years ago, and this is where Google can be your friend. His trick was to start the question with what is… and so doing that with your question, you would enter what is os x versions and from those hits, you'll get:
OS X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Finding the OS X version and build information on your Mac - Apple Support
Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers - Apple Support for specific builds
etc. etc.
That method often works well.

I'm not trying to sound glib, but like sort of like teaching one to fish. ;)

So in your case OS X 10.8.x versions are all referred to as Mountain Lion

I hope that helps. I'll keep thinking for possible Notifications fixes, but maybe keep close tabs and notice which Notification you actually click on, as if you haven't been doing so already. ;)

EDIT:
I just thought, at least for a possible fix would be to use Herald
Available at: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32744/herald

Might be better than what you've got and overcome the problem. ;)

Thanks pm-r, those links were just what I was looking for, which included additional and useful info for future. I will be more diligent next time I receive a false mail notification, and report exactly what I get. I'm anxiously waiting for this (Black) Friday, in the hope of finding a good deal for an iPad Mini, probably 64gb, with Retina. Do you have any experience with any of the iPads and thus any recommendations? Tks. Dewi

My only experience with iPads has been with the used 16GB iPad 2 my eldest son gave me while I was in hospital for several weeks last year, and a used 64GB iPad 3 retina we got from him earlier this year.

Both are on iOS 7.1.2 as we don't need or have any use for any of the newer iOS 8.x "features". Personally I find them handy for some things but also quite frustrating and limited for other stuff.

I got so fed up with mine and so much of Apple's restrictions that I jailbroke it, mainly so that I could clean off so much of the surplus crap Apple insists on installing, like surplus languages etc. I was able to clean out almost 4GB of unnecessary crap!!! Not a bad saving on a limited 16GB iPad!! ;)

Good luck on your search. But I'm not sure what the Canadian Apple Store may have for any Black specials. I do know I got an Airport Express 3rd gen for a decent "Black" saving about two years ago. So maybe they'll have some iPads. But also check their Refurbished section - always usually a good place to buy and save some money.

Thanks again pm-r. Interesting comments about the iPad, as my daughter keeps asking my -"Why do you need it - Dad?", when I have a fairly new MBA -13"??:) I was visiting my son in Qualicum Beach summer 2012, when I visited the Future Shop in Nanaimo, with the sole intention of discussing iPads. The young salesman, talked me out of it, and more or less into this MBA (from Apple, not FS). I looked into refurbs very closely, but Apple.ca never had ANY in stock, and Apple.com will not ship to Canada, but I would have been able to have a snowbird friend forward it to me from Florida. Having weighed all the pros and cons, exchange - taxes, expensive mail, (no duty though) and possibility of needing service later, I decided to wait for a Canadian resale bargain instead. I'm in no hurry, and becoming more hesitant about the whole idea, day by day. Cheers Dewi

I just thought I'd mention that the ehmac.ca site has some recent iPads for sale and most are in your general area.

I don't know if you have to be a member to view them or not, but I think the restriction is only for posting. Anyway, have a look:
iPhone, iPad, iPod & iOS - ehMac.ca

Some good, honest and respected members there. ;)

Thanks again pm-r. Never heard of ehmac before, useful to know about. One can view the for sale items, not too many new items or iPads, but I think I'll sticks\ with the new ones -IF I decide to go ahead with it. Thanks again, Dewi

pm-r. I just received 4 false previously received mail notifications, 3 dated 19th.Nov to one email address, and another one dated 24th. to another of my two enail addresses. All were to different 'recipients'. The 'red' # appears on the Mail Stamp in the tool bar, and each are marked with the blue (unread) dot. I don't know if all this is of any consequence. I have not yet deleted any of them.Dewi

Maybe some guru will chime in with some suggestion, but I don't know why, but you may want to read some of the suggestions here like the one to temporally delete the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 file I came across with a web search:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2133249?start=375&tstart=0

Make sure you have a current backup when mucking about with such files. ;)

It wouldn't hurt to do a google search on MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 first, and before mucking about.

Edit:
But I just thought, it might be a good idea to just try rebuilding your mailboxes first, available via the menu. Or use Mail Help for more info.

Thanks again pm-r, I Googled MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3[/B as suggested, which warned not to use this link, but I did reach pages of Apple posts on the subject, all from 2009. I also tried your suggestion of rebuilding the mailbox, as per attached, but do you mean the Apple Menu, when you refer to 'Menu'? The attached screen shot was picked up from the Apple posts, but when I select 'Rebuild', nothing seems to happen.Any suggestions? Unable to attach screen shot or make a copy, but I'm sure your familiar with
Mailbox/Rebuild.

Like this screen shot below V:

And that's a bit scary that you get a warning to go to that site - an Apple discussions page?? that's some restriction you're getting. ;)
