I posted a question on the Apple Support Communities page:
I have a 2013 MacBook Pro. I am currently testing the beta version of OS Yosemite and would like to update when the final version is released but; I also use an iPhone 4. I realise iOS8 will not run on the iPhone 4 so my question is this. Can I update to OS Yosemite and still sync my iPhone or will the new version of iTunes be non-compatible? Both my wife and I were caught out in the iOS7 update when we discovered that iTunes needed to be updated to iTunes 11 in order to sync and neither of us can afford to update to iPhone 5 at this time because we live in part time Indonesia so would need to buy two unlocked phones outright.
This is the reply I got; "Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
We removed your post Yosemite and iPhone 4 because it contained information about beta software available only to Registered Apple Developers. For help, see our Developer Forums."
I'm quite puzzled by this reply. There are already any number of online articles on the subject but none fully answer my seemingly simple question or am I expecting too much?
There was a link in the email to the Developers site which would allow me to register as a Developer so I'm guessing here but that may let me into the "Inner Circle" where I can actually ask my question and perhaps get an answer. Wow, it's like industrial espionage. Is this a normal level of secrecy. I didn't have to register to get a beta copy of Yosemite.

It's not so much secrecy, as it is protocol.

You might try waiting until it is released and I'm sure there will be much more discussion on the topic.

I too have an iPhone 4 and plan to upgrade to OS 10.10. However I'm not as restricted as you and will gladly ditch my 4 year old iPhone if I have to.

I understand your question but in reality you are asking what something will be in the future and my best guess would be that the iTunes that ships with 10.10 will work with iPhone 4. I say that because currently 10.9 lets me sync my iPhone 3Gs that the kids use and it runs an unsupported OS. Since there are really no games being made to work for iOS4 I don't really sync them but to add music and remove pictures.

I'm running the second public beta of Yosemite which was released last week. I'm also running the version of iTunes released last week. I'm not on the beta right now but was over the weekend. My iPhone 4 seems to have synched fine.

Thanks guys that sort of confirms my hopes/assumptions and in the end I guess I will just have to wait and see. I accept that my (and my wife's) iPhone 4 will be unsupported in iOS8 so I suppose in the end they will need to be replaced if for no other reason than to take advantage of the new features available.
And yes MacsWork I suppose I understand protocol annoying as it may be sometimes. I suppose after carefully wording my question to who I assumed would be the best source of information to have it removed simply because "it contained information about beta software available only to Registered Apple Developers." was a bit annoying when I already have access to a public beta version. Maybe because this is the first time Apple has done this their protocol hasn't caught up yet. I noted that the Apple Registered Developer Agreement document has not been revised since 03/01/2010.

There must be a duplicate thread on this, because I left an answer in that other thread on this very topic.

Bottom line: your iPhone 4 will almost certainly work as normal under Yosemite and iTunes 12. And probably iTunes 13. Don't know about iTunes 14 though.
