Just finished upgrade .. finally!.. from Tiger to Snow Leopard, keeping both on partitions as advised. Find that Snow Leopard is not of a big enough size but unable to increase due to this being used as start-up. Can change Tiger partition size but not Snow Leopard. How can this be achieved, can it?

Why worry about a Tiger partition? What is so important Snow Leopard cannot handle? OS X.6 updated to OS X.6.8 is a rock solid operating system.

Well I will be finding out when I start to use it!

Parallels is the first one that wont work and as I keep reading they appear to be after your money all the time with upgrades and my version works fine for a fantastic Coral Draw Print House Magic software that I frequently use.

Just an update to say everything seems to be running OK in Snow Leopard with the exception of Parallels which runs fine in Tiger, although browser is connecting to Hotmail & Gmail in Tiger which it wasn't before and iPhoto will not work in Tiger as it has been updated.
I thought (wrongly!) that Tiger & Snow Leopard would run separately, have I done everything correctly?

Parallels is not of any concern as it just seems to work as it did in Tiger, what I was surprised at is iPhotos will not now work in Tiger as it has been updated and the browser has also updated so I can use it in Tiger without any issues (the main reason for the upgrade to snow leoard).

I kind of thought Tiger & Snow Leopard were running side by side without Snow Leopard changing and affecting Tiger. Is this what should occur or have I done something wrong, is what I would like to know?

Now that everything has been working OK since the upgrade to Snow Leopard I think it's time to clear Tiger of all the duplicate info, i.e documents, photos..
I want to keep some images collected to use with Parallels which will remain on Tiger.

Is there a safe and simple method to remove most of this info?

It is on a partition?

Just format. Snow Leopard being two operating systems newer than Tiger will over ride some of Tiger's applications. And as Snow Leopard is over five years old and no longer supported by Apple with Security Updates, may have to move on further in time.

This is what happens when one gets way behind with operating system updates.

Just make sure you have all your documents, photos..etc. you want and available for access with your SL and your Tiger OS can go poof and use the resulting space for something else or keep it as spare space.

But don't forget to have a backup of all your data. Even if some later OS X apps may want to update them.

Next step is an external caddy with a hard drive for backups.

+1!!!

And maybe even with a clone with CCC etc.

I can't believe how many users have read something about having a backup and then proceed to partition their boot drive and use the new partition as a backup!! There even used to be one in our local MUG club. Gheese... :D

I wish to keep some images & photos to use on coral draw through parallels on tiger, will I not lose if format?

Advised by Apple this is as far asI can go with my iMac.

Keep stuff on DVD and format? Never formatted a disc partition before, is it straightforward?

Have backup of tiger stuff on external hard drive so need to backup again.

I know this now but ....

Decided to clean up Tiger from hard disk, so did backup using Superduper, 1st SL partition then Tiger.
Deleted photos in Tiger and from Trash, and maybe just maybe (I think yes I mistakenly did!) deleted files to trash in SL.

Now then what I have is the pictures of the photos appear in small size in iPhoto but on opening I get a box with dotted lines around but no photo. I'll restore from backup...

Oh no the backup has not kept info from SL backup just Tiger (yes I know now what I didn't know then!)
So I cannot restore.

So I have a copy of all photos on CD & DVD discs and the ones on backup (in Tiger) which I can put back but they appear as an extra photo.

The question.
I've obviously done something which I'm sure there will be an easy answer to, restore/replace my photos to the way they should be! Is there a data file I've lost or any other solution?

Please accept my apologies for being inept in this matter, I just hope help is once again out there.

Any other info needed to assist I will hopefully be able to provide.

Lessons are learnt everyday.

Well, "Now then what I have is the pictures of the photos appear in small size in iPhoto but on opening I get a box with dotted lines around but no photo. I'll restore from backup..."

it seems that you've managed to delete or move the Originals or Masters folder of the originals from where iPhoto expects to find them, and what you have left are the Thumbnails that iPhoto uses just to display a smaller image of the original photos.

If you still have the appropriate folders you can get them back by relocating them to the proper place, otherwise you'll need to start over using your backups to get the originals back.

You may want to try using some helper app like iPhoto Library Manager that points iPhoto to the correct iPhoto Libraries.
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7158/iphoto-library-manager

It sounds like you were pretty ruthless with your cleanup, but if you did your clone properly, it should have kept everything you need. Unless your Trashed and Deleted some required stuff.

That's one reason why Apple hid the Users Library in later OS X versions so that the average user wouldn't do mucking around in there and mess things up. And the iPhoto folders were most vulnerable!! :D

Thanks for your reply.

I discovered Photo files in Trash (on SL) and used 'Put Back' but most photos and labels have returned to correct place but some just have labels and blank photos.

I now have about 200 blank photos like this.

Backup has photos but no labels only file numbers.

CD/DVD copies were 'exported' to include labels and this is going to be a very time consuming exercise, then I deserve a bit of punishment!

Wonder if it is possible to find photos with labels attached on backup, any thoughts?

I'm not sure, and I'm also not clear as to all that you did with your cleanup.

Maybe try booting from the clone and see what you end up with. I'm also not sure if the label stays with the photo or if it's a user OS X thing that's specific to the OS and User.

At least you have copies of your original photos which is often a lot more than some users end up with. :D

Learning something here about iPhoto and backups which has surprised me a little.
iPhoto does not seem an ideal platform for keeping photos on, as it seems to easily corrupt photos and the backup does not 'export' labels to go with photo, so if you need to restore the label is lost. I have some long labels giving decent descriptions.
