Migration assistant probs, different OS versions

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1 and need to migrate everything from my old MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.5 via a Time Capsule-based network (I don't use Time Machine on this TC). My problem is that although both Macs are on the same network, Migration Assistant can't see the other Mac from either Mac, so the migration stalls at the 'Looking for other sources...' stage.

Do I need to upgrade the old Mac to 10.9.1, or is there other way to do this? The new MacBook Pro is a 13" retina display, so no ethernet connection for direct transfer.

I do have an external hard disk with a Carbon Copy Cloner backup on it. Can I just connect this to the new machine and use the current (today) backup for the migration?

You can't use CCC to migrate between different machines. The best way would be to make a Time Machine backup of your old MacBook Pro that's running Lion. Then turn on the Migration Assistant on the new machine. It will give a choice of how to migrate, one of the choices will be Time Machine. It's easy and fast. All you have to do is come up with an external hard drive to use for TM if you don't want to use your TC.

Thanks. I would have to go out and buy another external drive to do that, but can probably get a cheap one locally. TM on the TC is not an option.

No other suggestions? Any idea why the two Macs can't see each other over the network? They can see each other in Airport utility.

You probably don't want to migrate over the network anyway, wireless especially, since it would be very slow. Even ethernet to ethernet is slow compared to using an external hard drive. Make sure the external drive you buy is USB 3 capable. That will enable you to use the USB 2 port on your old MacBook Pro and the USB 3 port on the new one.

Thanks. I went and bought a Seagate drive with USB3. Will look up how to use TM with a non-TC drive. I might be back for help with this.

Just posting to say that I've just completed the migration and doing the inevitable cleanup, especially Microsoft and Adobe. But that's always necessary. Sigh.

Thanks for the assistance, I can now use my lovely new MacBook Pro.
