I'd like to connect my Macbook Air to my Home Theater system. I want to play movies directly from my laptop onto my large TV. I have the necessary mini display to HDMI cable. When I hooked it up, I got HD picture through the AV receiver but no sound. Do i need to connect a separate cable into my receiver to get sound? The receiver is a Denon AVR-3311 CI. Ideally I thought the HDMI connection could covey picture and sound into the receiver. Thanks.

if your mba is pre 2010 you need an audio cable to your tv.

ycl1866 was asking what year your MacBook Air is. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen. Select "About this Mac". Click "More Info" on the box that appears. What model year does it say you have?

Well the Denon has audio out sockets. Does your Epson have a separate audio in? Which Epson do you have?

ecevik:

Connect a mini toslink to toslink cable up from the Mac to the Denon.

Head into Sound preferences and select the headphone port.

Either that, or connect to the Denon via HDMI from your Mac - am "assuming" it can be used as a HDMI switch since we don't know what model you have and then go from the Denon to the Epson for video.
