Hi Peoples,

not sure if this is the right place to be posting this.

Unfortunately for myself i accidently replaced a file in a folder with another with the same name. eg. when asked if i would like to replace existing file with the same name, i clicked yes.

will my mac have deleted the file within the folder and then replaced it with the file i was moving or will the file within the folder have been re written?

Does anyone think i have a chance of retrieving it with a file recovery prog. is what i'm getting at.

The Document in question is a word document.

Thank you for your time.

I would say it is possible.

The file didn't get over written, just the partition tables. However the more writes you make to the disk the less likely there is for retrieval.

The only time I tried to use a program to retrieve deleted files they all showed up as a file type with a random name so it took forever to find what I needed. Can't recall the app I used as it was maybe 6-8 years ago on an OS X Tiger server with 8 GB of deleted files.

The ultimate solution is Versions. But, you need Lion for that. Good luck!

The file was overwritten, thus, almost impossible to recover. However, if you had "Always make a backup" turned on in Word preferences, there is a good chance a backup of the file still exists in the folder where you designated the backup to be written. Of course if you did not select that preference, as I stated above your file is likely gone for good.
