After many years using a PC to program, I purchased a 17" MBP
Slowly getting to grips with it and enjoying the switch
However, I used to program in Microsoft Visual Basic and am now looking for a langauge to use on the Mac, not too dissimilar to VisualBasic
And advice appreciated

I haven't tried it myself but take a look at RealBasic. They have a 30 day trial so you get a chance to see if it meets your needs.
