i saw a similar post, but seeing as im technically inept i was hoping someone could really dumb things down for me.

i just purchased a WD 1TB drive for back up with my MBP.

on the box it says it needs to be formatted for OSX.

i tried erasing the drive under the disk utility option and selecting (Journaled) but it would not let me.

if this is merely a drive for storage use, can i leave it at FAT 32?

and what exactly is FAT 32?

If you are going to be using it just for storage purposes then yes you can leave it as FAT32. It can then be read/write on both OSX and Windows.
Explanation of FAT32 can be found here: Description of the FAT32 File System
