Backup Question?

I have 10.4 how can I create a backup of my disk image (is this the hardrive with everything on?) so I can put it on my external FireWire harddrive and then boot from it if I want? I would like to be able to boot from it by pressing option while starting.

You need cloning software. Either SuperDuper (shareware) or Carbon Copy Cloner (donation ware) are able to clone the contents of your hard drive to an external drive and make it bootable.
