So I'm new to Mac and OSX. I just recently purchased a 15inch Macbook Pro. I must say I'm impressed. I have one complaint. Everytime I download something and try to run it, I get the 'You are about to run a program downloaded from the internet' prompt. Is there a way to turn that off? I understand the need for security, but one should be able to turn off a feature if they wish.

OK, two complaints.
Also, when running certain programs like Mamp, I get prompted for my password everytime I try to start the server processes. Can I turn that off?

Don't wanna start a fight or anything, but this smacks of Vista user access control problems.

OS X is a Unix operating system and as such, is relatively safe from malware because it requires " admin permission" to make certain changes. Why would you want to defeat something that keeps you safe?

I tell the same thing to folks who complain about Vista and UAC "nagging" them. More than likely they're the ones who will get hit with a virus or malware causing them to have to format their hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Enjoy you new MBP and be thankful that Mac OS X is a safe operating system.

Regards.

So just sit down and shut up? Very helpful.

I know OSX is based on Unix. I'm am very well versed in Linux. I work in IT. I have a MS in computer science. However, I am very new to OSX. I understand the need for security, but you'd think there would be a way to turn these things off. I'm willing to face the consequences, but you're telling me no way, no how?

Not that I know of. These features keep you safe. Yes, the downloaded from the internet prompt can be annoying, but when OS X asks for your password, it wants to make sure it's you, not some idiot who broke into your house and started using your MacBook. If it is an idiot (who is not a hacker) who does not know your password, they won't succeed in installing software or changing preferences. If you lock your screen (so you have to enter your password when you wake your computer up) that's even.

It's annoying, but not a deal breaker. I just think, for the experienced user or hacker, there should be a way to turn it off.

The Mac v Pc ad where the PC had the secret service looking dude saying 'Cancel or Allow'? That commercial shouldn't be allowed on the air.
