Time Machine / Sparse Bundles

How does Time Machine deal with files that are open? Does it lock the file to prevent writing while it's being backed up?

I ask because I have a large sparse bundle (50G) and was wondering if it will get backed up WHILE it's mounted.

I use time machine with my hard disk and and also I putted some folder in to my hard disk. I gave it to my friend who has Pc and needs these folders. But he can't see my hard disk on his Pc.

I also tried with his hard disk. He putted some folders in his hard disk and gave it to me. I can see folders.
I used my hard disk with my mac for the first time.

What should I do?
