O.K. here's the situation:

The HD on my macbook failed, so I replaced it. I used the system restore discs that came with it, and disc 1 loaded with no problems. Disc 2 stops at 54% and gives an error message saying there was a problem. On further inspection, I noticed that disc 2 is very badly scratched. I tried to use disc 2 that came with my imac, but that did not work because it is a different version. My next idea was to wipe the HD clean again and just use the second set of discs. Thats where the problem begins. The only screen I can access asks me to insert disc 2. All the drop down menus are greyed out, as well as the option to go back. I entered single user mode hoping to be able to erase the HD from there. The only commands I can find online are to erase everything under a specific username. Obviously since this HD has never had OSX fully installed, there is no specific username. Can someone please tell me how to fully erase the HD in single user mode so I can reinstall OSX from the beginning?

This might help:

OS X commands

Also, you might be able to make a good copy of Disk 2 using the burner on your iMac. Sometimes a scratched disk will read enough to copy from but not execute. Give it try.

Regards.

Tried to copy the disk, but it would not work. Got a message saying it was copy protected. Thanks for the OSX commands....still trying to figure out what they all mean.

Go back into the OS X commands and set your mouse cursor on "diskutil", then click to bring up the syntax and sub commands. You'll see from the command line (single user) you can erase and format. Not exactly user friendly though. :[

You don't need disk 2 to install OS X, it only contains additional software. If you click customize before installing and deselect everything but the base system, it will install with only the first disk. You wouldn't have all the additional software, but at least it would be up and running.

ended up going to the apple store, and they loaded osx from their store portable hd. it took only about 10 min. Also, i complained that the keyboard was cracked in the usual places, and even though it was out of warranty without applecare, they replaced it for free the same day. sweet!
