Patrick, Softonic spreads software in multiple places with names without any reference to Softonic in it. The video posted by LIAB shows that clearly. FAF is worth a try, but it probably won't find everything.

@Patrick:

That was already suggested to him in post #28. I'm afraid though that it's beyond what Keith feels that he could do.

By the way, good to see you back again.

Thanks Charlie, it's nice to be back home after 2 1/2 weeks at the local hospital getting some repairs and internal body repairs done. Still some recovery to go but in a lot better shape than when I went in.

And it all started with a requisition from my Dr to get a chest x-ray and some blood work tests at the local hospital.

Thank God my wife was with me to help as during the x-ray, the nurse said this guy needs oxygen, and fast, which led to the emergency ward, then an overnight stay, then the rest of the time in their regular ward with CTIs, more x-rays, and some IV blood/hemoglobin, plasma transfers and some scope explorations and internal laser surgery.

That's about the basics.

And no, my m-f password would not work with my iPad 3 which I had the use of with the hospital free guest Internet access.
But nice to be able to use my iMac once again with most things working as they should.

Gosh Patrick, that must have been a bit of a scare. Glad to hear you are on the mend.
Best wishes from us.

Thanks Rod, and yes it was a bit of a scare and I didn't realize the seriousness of it all when I first went to the doctor not feeling very well that had been going on for several days.

Bottom line, don't put off seeing the doctor or checking into the emergency for a check over. It could be more serious than one thinks, and in this case it was.

Hopefully full recovery will continue to improve, but some like my COPD, blood pressure and heart rate can probably only be controlled with medications.

Thanks for your concerns.

Wow, Patrick, what an adventure (and not in a good sense)! Glad to have you back. I thought maybe you were on a trip, without your iMac. I, too, have found that the app will NOT log into the website with my passwords, no matter what I tried, so I just use Safari on the iPad to get to the site. That seems to work.

That's something we will have to look in to. I use Safari on my iPad to access the forums because it's easier. However, when on my iPhone I use the Mac-Forums app. And so far it has worked well; no problem logging on.

I didn't even try using the M-F.app, but I could not login regardless of what browser I tried on my iPad, but it worked when I got home and used the same password and login on my iMac. Well, for at least your day or so it did. Then I suddenly got told I had requested a password change cuz I couldn't get it to work I had to go through the whole password change routine again on my iMac.

It seems to be working for the last day or so, at least on my iMac. I probably won't try using my iPad as it frustrates me too much it does not work the way I would expect a computer to work. It's more of a convenience toy than a computer to get some work done IMHO.

Hey Patrick:

Lots of younger folks are using iPads when they travel instead of taking along a notebook computer. I have to agree with you about using an iPad as they (at least for me) do not work very well with my fumble fingers. After using a computer for so many years it's hard to adjust to a touch screen device.

I normally use Safari on my iPad during my downtime at work and have no problems logging in. I didn’t have the app but just downloaded it and logged in no problem. I was able to fill in my credentials automatically with 1Password and again after logging out with Keychain.

Best guess at moment is maybe the hospital that Patrick was at is blocking this site, at least in part? For some reason, iCloud is blocked here on the free public wifi and I can’t check my email unless on a vpn or on cellular. Gmail? No problem. Go figure. Makes literally no sense.

This is coming from the app on my iPad. I was able to login for the first time just now!

Good morning, I am like a drowning man here clutching at straws and I will explain my thoughts:- because I do not have any indication that tells me I have softonic on my iMac basically means that I cannot remove it!!! I have tried, believe me I HAVE TRIED!!! Now I have been thinking "How else can Softonic know my PC?" I have not got a clue but my thoughts are this:- my pc has an ID, though what that is I have no idea but somehow Softonic knows it. They are using this knowledge to keep annoying me and I am getting peed off with it. Does anyone know how to block just one company for access to my pc. Perhaps these thoughts are simply pie in the sky or castles in the air.

Very best regards fro Keith in Derby England.

Softonic hides its name from you, so searching for "Softonic" will not find the culprit. I don't think they are somehow controlling your machine remotely as there are easier and less expensive ways to annoy you. These Notifications, can you tell us more about them? How do they appear? How do you make them go away? Are they in the notifications list when you click on the Notifications items icon in the upper right corner (three lines of a dot and a bar is the icon). To use Time Machine or the clone, you would have to go back to before the notifications started to appear, maybe further.

How about this? Can you download Etrecheck (EtreCheck) and run it, get the results and post them here? You don't have to pay for Etrecheck, just use the free version. You can let it run, save the report, then copy it into a post, so you won't have to try the attachment process, just copy and paste. With that report, we can see what is loading in your system and may be able to find the issue for you.

You said it Charlie,

, and I am not among that group. :Smirk:

Besides I also have fat non-capacitive cooperating fingers suffering from psoriasis rheumatoid arthritis. At least a decent stylus helps but I really question some of the iOS software designs and GUI and wonder what the Apple iOS x designers were thinking.

Anyway, even having the iPad 3 in the hospital ward sure beats staring at the walls and out the window. We actually got a decent dump of snow (6"-8") while I was in there and was quite pretty with some of the seasonal lights still up and twinkling away at night. My poor wife ended up having to shovel our driveway in order to drive to the hospital. What a trooper and great nurse!!!

Does this also apply when using Find Any File.app and searching for the 'sonic' name etc. that is also invisible I wonder???

Yes, some of the names are quite un-sonic. The video in post #35 shows Softonic putting things in folders named CTLoader, Toolbars, Conduit, among others. Softonic is quite sneaky at not being easy to find.

Good morning MacInWin and others, I have come to the honest conclusion that this problem is well outside my comfort zone and that I am going to take the iMac to the professionals. I do have Apple Care until 2021 and wonder if that might be of any use? Paying for a solution is not really a problem as Mavis has said "needs must when the Devil drives". That means the budget can and will stand the strain. The only snag is how to get it away to where ever the repair centre is but that is my son in law's problem not mine! Being a wheelchair user does bring limitations as to what can be done, I might be able to use my three wheeled walker if I take my time but only for a short distance and son in law would have to carry the iMac.
That being so I would like to send my heart felt thanks to one and all who have helped me in my time of trouble - THANK YOU ALL.
Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Keith, can I suggest that before your SIL drags the iMac to the store, that you show him this thread and see if he can use any of the suggestions that have been made to sort it out without having to lug the thing to the store?
