Ignore this post - I just repeated a load of stuff that had already been mentioned, so I've deleted it.

Jake, I have studied posts 24 & 27 and whilst they are clear to you and every-one else to me they are as clear as mud; sorry but I cannot either understand or complete the task. I plead complete ignorance on that one - so sorry my friend.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Hi Keith in Derby - Ken in Norwich here. :)

I have just made a little 2-minute video which shows how to take a screenshot of just a portion of the screen, and then it shows how to use the forum's "Insert image" button to upload it to the forum. If you CLICK HERE you will be able to watch it. I hope it helps clarify the process for you.

The reason I'm showing how to screenshot just a portion of the desktop is because the forum can't accept images bigger than 800 x 800 pixels, so a full-size shot of your whole desktop would be too big - and I imagine that these pesky Softonic notifications don't take up a lot of screen space, yes?

Cheers,
Ken

Just a suggestion for some possible places to try using a quick Google search.

Some good Mac support can usually save a lot of time and frustration and is usually well worth the money. In-home might be best considerin the situation.

Just a thought.

Jake, from what I see on my screen we have at last done it! All thanks to Ken in Norwich; many many thanks Ken. I get dozens of them every day, in Mojave go to the top righthand corner of the screen and click on the THREE DOTS and LINES. A notice board drops down today. or notifications.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Ken, good morning and thank you for the video which I followed stage by stage. It appears to have worked a treat -- thank you very much.

@Keith

Well done! I think we may have a solution. This is appearing as a Notification.

1. Open System Preferences. Click on the gear wheel in your Dock - looks like this: S0.png

2. Then click on Notifications - Red arrow - S1.jpg

3. On the left, all the things which post Notifications are on the left in alphabetical order - Red Arrow - Scroll down till you, hopefully, come across Softonic - Click on it to highlight it - in my case I have chosen Safari - Yellow arrow.

4. Go across to the Right and select "None" - another Yellow arrow - S2.jpg

5. That will stop all Notifications from Softonic

Give that a try.

Hello Ian, I have already looked at that and found it to be notification of an upgrade to the next OS X 10.15? cannot recall its name. Nice of you to drop in though, hope you and yours are well?

Keith, I think you misread what Ian said. Once you open System Preferences by clicking on the gear symbol, you don't again click the Gear, as that will, in fact, take you to Software Update, which is where the notification of an update to the software will be. What you want to click on is the Notifications icon, a little blue square with a red circle. It's on the top row, far left, just as Ian has indicated with his red arrow. Once there, the left column will show who can send you a notification. Look for Softonic there and make sure it is not checked. In fact, you can remove the check from all the items that you do NOT want to notify you of a message or activity. That should cut down on what is on the Notifications page (the dots and lines icon you mentioned).

And a hearty congratulations for figuring out how to post an image! See, you aren't thick after all!

Jake and Ian, Sorry in my haste I got it wrong! I have tried Ian's remark again but in the list as described Softonic does not appear at all.Under each item on the resulting list is a title (EG Safari) along with badges, sounds and banners. Those three items are in light grey printing so not operable.

Thank you Jake for the hearty congratulations but the praise must go to Ian not me! In all honesty I think I shall have to learn to tolerate Softonic as we do not seem to be able to find it. OH great joy and jubilation I now find I have been singled out by B&H PHOTO lots of offers, some dating back into last year. WHAT THE **** is happening to my computer? I am close to shutting it down completely and using my MacBook Pro instead.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Keith, they are in light grey because to change them you need to click on the little lock icon in the lower left corner and enter an administrator password (probably the one you use to log in will do) and they will change to black and the lock icon will open to be unlocked. Are you also getting emails from these folks (Softonic, B&H)? If so, it may be Mail that is sending the notifications. That can be turned off once you click the lock and unlock the control panel.

Now that you can post images, maybe take one of the Notifications panel showing the left column so we can see what is there? It does scroll down to more items, so you would need to look at all of them to see what has authority to send you notifications.

MacInWin, Jake first- there is not a small padlock icon anywhere in/on System Preferences; second- I am not getting any emails from Softonic or B&H. I am getting peed-off with it all but I have noticed that since lunchtime today I have not had any notifications at all; third - in the lefthand column all under each other is Calendar,Weather,Reminders,Stocks and Tomorrow. A screenshot of that lot would go from the top of the display to the bottom and from Ian's comments might be too large. It seems to me to be a generally useless list of useless items of news so I never use it. It is very scary not getting anything from Softonic etc -- have they fallen out with my lack of interest in their offers? My bit of sarcasm!!!

very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

Keith, I stand corrected. There is no lock on the Notifications panel. My mistake. Here is a shot of my Notifications panel:

Screen Shot 2020-02-11 at 10.54.08 AM.png

On it you can see that I have selected Dropbox and that it is allowed to send Badges, Sounds and Alerts. However, right below it is Duplicate File Finder, for which notifications are off, i.e., I get zero notifications from that application. Also note that there is a grey slider bar just beside Dropbox that can be used to move up and down in the column to see all of the applications that want to send notifications. At the bottom of the left column you can just see Games, which is not totally in view. So if I move the scroll bar down, more items below Games will appear. That's how you get to see all of the items that have been asking to send notifications to you.

OK, with that background (and correction), you can now scroll through everything that wants to send you a notification to see if Softonic is there, or if there is something you don't recognize or want to send you notifications. To stop notifications click on the None icon to set the notifications to nothing. I'm using Catalina, so the additional control above those choices where it says "Allow Notifications from Dropbox" may not be on your older system. I think it was added in Catalina.

So, you are close to getting rid of the notifications. Just move down the list and set what you want from each item. If you want nothing, just move down and click on the None icon for each one. Takes a bit of time if you have lots of them, but you'll be rid of them once done!

Keith, I opened up Mojave and took this screenshot of Notifications there to be more like your system:

Screen Shot 2020-02-11 at 11.06.30 AM.png

To get rid of all notifications, you click on None, then uncheck all of the boxes below as it shows in the image. Once done, the app lists on the left column with nothing below the name, as it is in Books. Again, the slider bar is grey, and can be used to scroll down to get rid of all of them, if you want to do that. (You can ignore the "Screenshot" bubble at the bottom, it's an artifact of how the screenshot was made on my system.)

MacInWin, Jake I have followed your points right through and feel much happier, only time will tell if we are on the right side of it. I must say that there is still nothing in the notifications slot - maybe just maybe we are on the right side; at least I hope so. Even if I am wrong I thank you and everyone else who has contributed to settling my troubles. Believe me you are all very much appreciated this way. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL.

Good, very glad that seems to be helping. Took some doing, but we seem to be on the right track. Well done, Keith, for hanging in there with this!

Keith, there is no need to get in a tizz about these things, they do not threaten your security or functions but they are very annoying. This relatively recent development of appearing on your screen as one thing, in your case Softonic, but being stored as something else makes them extremely difficult to remove. We have all (I think) had them and detective work and research is the only way to root them out. It took me two years to get out of Linkedin but although it was annoying it was not harmful. Recently I had a problem with Any Search Manager which highjacked my Safari search page but did not appear anywhere in my system. It defied all of the online instructions to remove it until i read an article mentioning MainPage. I did a search for that with Find Any File and there it was. I trashed it and voila! No more Any Search Manager.
These types of invasive malware are becoming more frequent and this is why we constantly stress the need to be very sure what you are doing when you click on a link or accept an offer that seems to good to be true or allow the download of so called "helper" apps.
Apart from Softonic sites like MacWorld, Cnet and Softpedia are all risky these days, not necessarily because the sites themselves are evil
but because the software they offer often comes packaged with malware installed by some third party.
If I do find something I want on these sites, and remember I'm using the best of anti tracking, ad blocking software and a VPN, I take note of the developer's name and go to their site then download from them.
As the old guy in the Dad's Army series used to say, "Don't panic."
Let's hope you've solved your problem for now and if not get back to us and hopefully the combined intelligence of MacForums will help you find a solution.

Good morning, or it would be if Softonic would leave me out of their mailing list! I reported yesterday of a lull in Softonic sending offers to my computer. Sadly I have been targeted yet again by them and one from B&H PHOTO. Very soon the iMac will be taken off line ready to go into town to the Apple shop. Very soon I shall be using the MacBook Pro instead; at least that is clean!!! Does anyone know - will Apple Care be of any use to me or will I have to pay for the cleaning operation???

Going to the local hospital this morning so will be off line for around 5 hours from now.

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England.

If you can explain it properly, and show them what is happening, they should be able to remove the irritating issue. I'm still unsure what it is?
