Although the developer has updated for MacOS 10.12 and above it is being rejected by my iMac. Why might this be?

Works fine on my system and I'm running Catalina 10.15.2. As Nick said, what do you mean by rejected? Have you tried to download it again and install?

In Security & Privacy, you likely have the setting for Identified Apps enabled and being an open source project, these guys likely haven't gone through that process. Once the app fails to launch, go to Security & Preference and you will now see a new entry added for this app with the button "Open Anyway". Click on that to open it and it will launch every time after.
