Bit of a long shot this, and I wasn’t really sure where to post it. It involves iCloud and the dreaded Windows, but here goes:-

My wife has an iPhone 5c and a Windows 10 PC. She has an Apple account with which her iPhone is synchronised.

I noticed that she appeared to have about six duplicate entries in Contacts on her phone, one of each of the duplicates appeared to be out of date so I deleted them, and they remain deleted on her phone.

All appeared well until I accessed her iCloud account on her PC and found that the Contacts that I had deleted on her phone were still there. I tried deleting them, but they returned so I tried editing them and after completing the edit clicked on ‘Done’ and got the message ‘Your changes to this Contact couldn’t be saved because it was just updated by another device’.

She uses Thunderbird as an email client, which does not appear to be synchronised with her iCloud Contacts, and none of the undeletable contacts appear in the addresses contained within Thunderbird.

It appears that something, somewhere, is synchronising with iCloud but has anybody got any idea how to find out what? Or how I can delete the unwanted, out of date, Contacts?

Does your wife have the latest version of iCloud for Windows? If she doesn't have the latest version it can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft store.

There are articles about using iCloud for Windows but my understanding from what I have read thus far is that it works with Windows 10 and more or less offers the same conveniences as does the Apple version. In other words, it should be syncing her contacts between iCloud and the iPhone 5c.

I can't be of much help when it comes to Thunderbird as I no longer use it as a mail client but I do know it will sync contacts with Google. (gmail)

Thanks for replying.

She does have the latest version of iCloud and Windows 10 is up to date.

It is my understanding that the files contained in iCloud take precedence and that any changes carried out to those files should be reflected in devices synchronised with iCloud. Yet there are six contacts amongst thirty others that cannot be edited or deleted but they can only be viewed on iCloud and NOT on the iPhone synchronised with iCloud! All other contacts are capable of editing and deletion and can be viewed on both the iPhone and iCloud.

There are no other devices synchronised with iCloud.

I suspect that this will probably remain a mystery and niggle away at me for sometime to come. My wife, on the other hand, couldn't care less!

Happy New Year.
