I must be doing something wrong. I did a restart, was prompted to enter pw..did that and held down option key....then system just came up like it normally does when I open my Mac.

That probably means you either are doing something wrong or the clone you made is not bootable.

Unfortunately, I do not use SuperDuper to make my clones so I don't know why it would not allow you to shut down. I suspect though that you may have left out a step which is why the app would not let you close it. Try making another clone and if necessary, take a look at SuperDuper help and instructions. Maybe you can see something that might have been missed.

This is one reason why you want to test your clone, and make sure everything works!!!

First, You need to Shutdown, make sure your SD cloned backup Drive is connected and turned on, press StartUp and immediately press and hold the option key.

You should end up with a selection, to choose from, at least your normal boot Drive and your connected external clone bootable Drive.

Give it another try.

@Patrick:

Sorry to be off topic here, but to carry on, here's a screenshot of the text that will not post for the admins to look at and maybe explain why it will not post:

I have no explanation for what happened. But there are definitely weird things going on with your interaction to our forums. I don't know if it's something the software doesn't like about you or some kind of Gremlins that are lurking about your computer waiting for a chance to annoy you.

In any event, we will try to figure something out. I've tried to duplicate some of what you experienced but it just doesn't seem to work the same way from my end.

Regards, Charlie

that did not go well... when I press the start button it seem to erase my fingerprint start. Worked around that and got it working again.

grrrrr.... Decided to run super Duper again. read the user guide but could not find anything helful for me.... im just into so much techy stuff. i read in guide that previous clone backups will erase! so i wont have duplicates.

Took about a half an hour to do. Screen popped up and wanted me to register ... I clicked later and did not register.
Clicked OK....at bottom of superduper screen as all items were checked. thought I was done.
however the same screen popped up again wanting to know if I wanted to copy. still cannot click red button to close.

do i have to register to make this work?

so I ran this again....could to register. good.
screens that showed....see pics.... tried to open and edit size of pics but in preview the super duper screen came up. the one that won't close. and now cannot post pics.

don't know what else I should be doing. .......going to give up.

never have done a clone backup before. and when I did run into problems. I just set device back to mfg settings and re installed my OS. I still have Sierra on a thumb drive.

Thanks Charlie.

Interesting, that I was finally able to get the first part ...1/2... of the message to post after I split it up, but there's just something in that second part ...2/2... Text shot that something in vBulletin it just doesn't approve of.

Why is there no feedback or message or indication or anything why it won't work? I just get taken back to a previous mac-forum page I was at as if nothing had happened.

Anyway, hopefully, this works.

@lori,

If you can bear to wait till tomorrow (Tuesday afternoon, 3 December, my time), I shall try to provide a blow-by-blow account of how to set up and use SuperDuper! (SD!) - with pictures!! It's near bedtime here (for me anyway) and this will take up a bit of energy & concentration.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) mainly, but have SD! set up as well, so I'm familiar with the app.:D

@lori,

As promised:

We are going to start from scratch because I don’t things went well. So, first off, we have to format the the External Hard Drive (EHD) to which you are going clone your Mac.

Connect the EHD via USB directly to your Mac. Now open Disk Utility (DU) - found in Finder > Applications > utilities > Disk Utility.

Leave it for a moment to populate all your Drives. Select your chosen EHD. It will likely bear the name of the manufacturer, say, Toshiba, Seagate etc.. Under this will be an indent. Click on that. Then from the top of the DU window, choose “Erase”. From the small window that appears, you will see NAME. In that box, give the Disk a name - say - SD.

Underneath the NAME is FORMAT. Choose “Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)”. Then click “Erase”. (We are choosing this format because you are on Sierra).
See images below:

S3.jpg

S4.png

When that is done, you will see on your desktop the EHD with the word SD beside or underneath it.

Now open SuperDuper! (SD!) In "Copy" will be Macintosh HD. In the box “To” navigate to your EHD on the Desktop named “SD”. Underneath is another box in which, if not already chosen for you, select “Backup - all files”.

Before we start, look below and click on “Options”. In the Box “During Copy”, choose Smart Update Super Duper etc - it may be there by default. If not, choose it. Then click OK. That takes you back to picture 3. See below:

S5.jpg

S6.jpg

We are now ready to go - at last! Click on “Copy Now”. That will start the process. Let it proceed. It will take a long time, but subsequent copies will be incremental because we have chosen “Smart Update” and take much less time. When it is finally finished, Quit SuperDuper! (SD!).

Remember to Eject the “SD” EHD properly, unless you aim to keep it attached all the time.

Try that and let us know. Good luck.

Ian

good afternoon Ian and goodmoring here...thanks for replying!!! ill send cookies.... lol lol
I see that I had the same thing.
1. my EXD has been formatted to the correct format.
2. I had to download again super duper...from shirt pocket site...tho when the screen popped up saying do I want to open this file..I noticed in small print that the file came by safari from s3.amazonaws.com.....mayb I didn't get a valid super duper copy!!!
3. the only thing that I probably should not do is choose the smart update...as I had already erased my EHD...so would choose erase super duper and then copy. because I was having issues with closing super duper screen at end...
4. I did notice at bottom of screen options to do on successful completion. one was quit super duper.....and thought I should choose that since I was having problems closing screen when I tried super duper the first time.
5. will be back with results

I think s3.amazonaws.com is Amazon's cloud server. ShirtPocket may be using Amazon's cloud services to hold the downloadable software for them.

chscag said.....The more backups you have the better. So yes, make a Time Machine backup and also a SuperDuper clone. That's called insurance. You can run OnyX later after everything is up and running okay.
Let us know how it went.

I have copied all my docs etc to an EXD, time machine backup and super duper clone all done.

now on to onyx....ive read all the things it does...my question would be...do I just let it run or do I have to choose from various options...some of which I may not know what they are all about.

Leave the default settings. Click on the "Maintenance" tab and then "Run Tasks." That's really all there is to it.

hi all just started to run Onyx and it said in a pop up licence agreement with several warnings etc one saying...
Before running Maintenance or Cleaning tasks, you should check the startup disk and its system files.
This verification is essential and can be made when OnyX is opened or from the "Structure of the Disk" pane of the Maintenance toolbar item or from the Automation toolbar item. Errors in the structure of the system files are not uncommon and can have disastrous consequences if they're not repaired.

is this something I need to do or be concerned about.
