I own a 2009 iMac 27" with 16 gig of ram and running High Sierra.

I have a Netflix account on my desktop PC, I can view on up to 2 screens, so I thought I would be able to view content on my iMac ..... Set up worked well and my second view screen was linked to the iMac, but when trying to watch any film or program I get the error message that I need to install Silverlight to enable viewing on Safari. So I installed Silverlight 5 for MAC and tried again, but I still get the error page asking me to install Silverlight.
The result is that I cannot choose any streaming content from Netflix? Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Any help and advice would be welcome.:(

After installing Silverlight...did you reboot the computer?...sometimes this helps.

I have Netflix running no problem with my 2011 MacBook Pro (Safari, macOS 10.12.6).

In case it helps...here are a couple Netflix links for running Netflix on Mac's:

https://help.netflix.com/en/node/55764
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742

Hope this helps,

- Nick

p.s. Thread moved to better area (macOS - Apps & Games).

Those are the help files I followed, but I still get these help messages popping up every time I try to run a Netflix file or program, and I cannot stream anything?

Try rebooting the computer into Safe Mode. This prevents some items from auto-loading...items that may be interfering with Silverlight & Netflix. I'm going to guess that with a 2009 iMac...if it's it's been a while since you've done an maintenance or "cleaning"...you may have items that are conflicting with each other.

Try Chrome, I've had issues with Safari and Netflix.

On another note, you might be able to install Flash, Adobe Flash Player Install for all versions, and then Safari might work. Be sure to only get Adobe Flash, from Adobe.

The 2nd link in post #2 mentions an html 5 option. Might give that a try.:)

I'll try the HTML 5 option and let you know ... If that doesn't work I will give Flash a try.

I use Friendly Streaming which is free in the app store. It does not need a browser or Silverlight. They do ask for donations but it is not required.

I can confirm the same issue on my son's iMac.

Rather than contaminate my system with Microsoft's Silverlight, we just use Chrome whenever we need to view Netflix on that computer.

NSMacGuru: Thank you for providing a simple and effective solution. ..... I have never liked Google Chrome as a browser, but it works perfectly with Netflix, and I can live with that! The problem is now solved.
