There is a new, free, Web browser for the Macintosh, and this browser is really interesting.

Why? Well in addition to a BUNCH of really great features, such as ad blocking, download acceleration, anti-tracking, protection from malicious Web sites, etc....

this browser has a built-in (free) VPN (a rare feature), and it's the only browser currently that automatically checks your downloads for malware!!!

UR Browser (free)
UR | Secure & Fast Web Browser. Optimized For Privacy. European.

The UR Browser is based on Chromium, and it's already 64-bit. I've been testing it, and so far it's FAST and has good compatibility with various Web sites.

Opera, also based on Chromium, provided a free VPN when it was released a while back. Looks like there are a lot of "new" browsers coming out based on Chromium with a little bit of extra sauce laid on top.

Using the download button, one gets a file called "setupReleases" in beta format. Is that at Randy?

This guy doesn't have much good to say about this browser

Good find!

But note that that post is a year old, that UR promised to fix everything complained of, and that even as we speak UR for the Mac is still in Beta.

Even not taking into account the extra special features, so far I've found UR to be very fast, well thought out, and compatible with every Web site I've visited so far. It might be my favorite browser even if the VPN and malware scanner aren't very good. More testing and time will tell.

Some folks are having problems downloading and/or getting the UR browser to launch. Some of these folks are download the Windows version instead of the Macintosh version. Those folks should try this URL for the download:

UR | Secure & Fast Web Browser. Optimized For Privacy. European.

And, if you can't find the UR browser after you have downloaded it, it installs in your "user" Applications folder, not your universal Applications folder.

[hard drive icon] --> Users --> [you use name] --> Applications

I installed the UR browser on my 27" i7 iMac running High Sierra. It seems to work fine. Only thing I noticed, I ran a few browser benchmarks on UR and Safari and on a few Safari was quite a bit faster. Otherwise with the little I have been able to use it, it seems ok. Will mess with it more down the road.

I can report that although I haven't tried the macOS Edge (beta) browser I am using it it sporadically on my iPhone and iPad and I've found it to be a pretty polished act as you might expect. Its controls are intuitive, simple, easy to use and access.

As for the UR Browser, I suppose it's a sign of the times that more and more security measures and mechanisms seem to be incorporated into our digital lives. The latest version of Firefox Quantum claims to include anti phishing and malware protection as well as regular automatic security updates. So it would be interesting to see a current evaluation of the UR Browser rather than an outdated one. If it truly provides a VPN as apposed to an unencrypted proxy and something other than a version of AdBlock Plus then it could indeed be a sort of "one stop shop' for people requiring intermittant additional security say overseas or for online financial transactions although I can't believe that any real VPN service could be provided free of charge.

As a browser its pretty basic and simple. Extensions are all via Chrome store so no surprises there, hard to compare it to the truly innovative Chromium based Vivaldi Browser with its multiple tab management and unique UI.

For my money the combination of a standalone "no logging" VPN like Express, Adguard and a tough flexible browser like Firefox is pretty difficult to beat.

I’ll add another belated Happy Birthday, Harry.

And, thanks for the link, Randy. Will play with it when I get unburied from all of these boxes from moving . . .
