I can understand that ads supply revenue for sites and that it's part of doing business, but sites that have excess ads are just not worth visiting.

Call me dense or dumb but what I don't get get is how does a webpage site get paid if no-one clicks on any of the ads they are displaying??

If most webpages use Cost Per Click (CPC) or Pay-per-click (PPC) which seems to be the most popular, what's the difference between not clicking on any ad or hiding it from view with an ad blocker in the first place?

Well OK, maybe an interesting ad may possibly show up at some point that may get clicked but that doesn't seem too likely as so many ads I see are so static.

Or do some websites get paid just exposing the ad(s) and get paid according to the number of visitors?? In such cases if so, I would think that they would need a huge number of visitors to generate much revenue.

Obviously I am not very aware as to how Paid ads work on some webpages.

I think it's the advertisers themselves who drive that attitude. After all, if an advertiser is paying a site to post their ads and the ads are not being seen, (poor sales) they rightly complain and probably threaten to remove their business.

I was amazed the other day when on the news they gave an example in US dollars how much money Facebook makes on advertising revenue.

No kidding!!!
With more than $1 billion per quarter in advertising revenue and 1.2 billion monthly active users, few realize that Facebook is more than just a social networking site – it's a shrewdly run corporation, worth more than $100 billion.
How Does Facebook Make Its Money?

And some wonder why they are so bullish and arrogant!!! MONEY!!! And POWER!!

This is the site without ad blockers. That page took 8 seconds to load. Bottom right is a continuous video playing. Every so often additional pop ups will appear.

Just reporting back on my experience/experiment with AdGuard:

First let me stress this is the standalone, system wide application.

It is fantastic, works on all browsers and sites and any app which may show advertising at startup.

It's even better on iOS for games and free versions of apps that display annoying full page ads on launch, including the MacForums app.

But, the two week trial period is over and to obtain a licence it would cost me $24.95/month charged yearly.:Not-Amused:

I wrote a short email to support stating that although ads are distracting and the app's additional functions like tracking, phishing and malware protection are all very good I can get those functions from free apps and search engines.

After all my VPN (Express) is a top of the line product and works across platforms for 5 devices and only costs a third of their yearly subscription fee.

So I have downloaded their free extension for Safari, re enabled Ghostery on Firefox (there is an extension for AdGuard) and I will see how it performs.

Hi Rod

I'm staggered by the cost.

I checked my records just now and purchased AdGuard late 2018. It cost me £59-76 (after conversion from Euros) and, as you will see from the screenshot below, this is for a lifetime license.

Presumably a special offer??? I'm almost certain that one of our members (ferrarr aka Bob) was the person who recommended this standalone app.

Okay, I might have to eat humble pie here. This is what I got when I clicked the link in app to register my product;
Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 18.27.37.jpg

As you can see circled down the bottom $24.95 I assumed that's per month because 23950.00 Rp (IDR) is near enough to AU $24.00

But when I checked at the website with my VPN on (set to Australia) I see a completely different price.
Screen Shot 2019-04-28 at 18.40.29.jpg

So in fact it was merely an error on my part and what I read as 23950 is really 2395.00 which roughly translates as AU$2.39 which they corrected to AU24.95/year (not per month)

So my bad, good product at a reasonable cost if that's what you need. I can say it does what it claims to do.

I do not use any adblocker. I've tried a couple but found them more of a nuisance than a benefit as far too many sites I visit restrict access or simply do not work if they detect an adblocker. I now have a fibre broadband connection so the time taken for ads to load is not an issue and I find I can ignore ads far easier than the adblocker pop-up messages.

Thank you for your courage & honesty, Rod.:app

I obviously got a one-off offer; but the cost at, say, 25 Australian Dollars per year is not OTT for what it does. As I said earlier, it is the only product I use. No Safari extensions and so on, as I used to have.

Kind of you to respond.

Ian I have to say I reconsidered my decision after discovering my mistake but iII think I will give the free Safari extension a fair trial and see how it matches up.
As far as the iOS app goes I'm very taken with that. I can see no reason at this time to update it to the Pro version in fact it may cause problems with my existing VPN as it mimics some of the features of a VPN and according to AdGuard is not advised to be used in conjunction with Express VPN.
