QuickTime 10 Video Trimming Question/Problem

In QT Player, File -> Share -> Add to Photos.
Then, in Photos, File -> Export -> Export Unmodified Original for 1 Video.

Or, even better, in QT Player, File -> Share -> Mail.
Then, in Mail, drag and drop the attachment to the Desktop.

I'm guessing your implication is that doing either of those two things will share the file as an .mp4 instead of .mov? In any case, it's a moot point now, because I've tried QT10 again recently for splitting clips and now the file sizes are in check, even if it converts it to .mov. Or maybe I've just been lucky and it depends on the particular video.

The methods I posted will save the edited video in its original format. Apple saves it with the file extension ".mov", but it is an MP4 file if that's what you edited. Just change the file extension to ".mp4".
