Last night sent an important message to a doctor via my icloud email account to [email protected].

Checked on my iMac late last night and my android phone and no response.

However, this morning I checked the Messages app and there was a response from the doctor last night right after I sent the email.

If I had not checked the message app on the iMac, I would have missed this.

The message did not appear in my Mail, did not appear in my Notifications alert, but still shows in the Message App.

What is going on here! Why did the message not remain in my notification, or show up last night when I checked, and why is it not in my email!

Comments?

iMac, El Capitan

You sent a text message to your doctor with your Android phone? Text messages via an Android phone or Android device are not sent using iMessage, they are sent SMS. SMS messages take considerably longer to traverse the system than iMessages which may be the reason you didn't see the response until later. If you were using an iPhone, the message would have appeared immediately or shortly thereafter when it was sent.

SMS text messages do not show up in Mail nor notifications. They will show up on your Mac in the messages app if the text was addressed correctly.

Both iMessages and SMS messages do not show up in email.

@rim45

Do I understand the situation correctly?

You sent an email from [email protected] to your Doctor at the @vzwpix.com address? Not a text message?

Or was it a text message? That would have to sent from a phone (your number) to the Doctor (their number).

I ask for clarification.

Is your iCloud email account linked to your phone number? VZWPIX is a gateway to send people with Verizon accounts emails that show up as MMS'. So when they respond on the phone, it will go back to you on the Messages app if the link has been made.

On your Mac, go to System Preferences->iCloud. Click on Account Details on the left and then select the Contact tab. You will see a list of how you are reachable. You will have your Apple ID email, your phone number and any @me.com or @icloud.com accounts.

My daughter only has an iPad and she uses her @icloud.com account to communicate in Messages.

If the doctor has an iPhone then this further supports my theory.

Yes I used email to send a text message because of the length of the message. Too long for standard messages.

The doctor has an iPhone, and I sent the email to their iPhone Verizon account.

The response showed up this morning because I happened to open the Message App on the iMac. It did not show up in Mail, or on my Android Phone in the Mail app or Message app.

Thanks

I cannot speak for your Android phone. Never had one, don't want one, don't know how they work. However, what you did was to email a text message to the doctor, who responded by text message. You said the text was too long for texting, but basically, what the doctor got was not email, but a very long text, exactly the same as if you had texted the long message to him directly. He then responded to that text by texting back to you. To see that text on your Mac, you need to have Messages open. If it is open, you will get a notification ON THE MAC, to say the message has arrived. It won't show in Mail because the doctor didn't respond by mail, but by text message. So, everything worked as it should, except for your Android phone, which apparently has issues with email and messaging. As I said, I don't know how they work at all so can't comment on the failure.

So, if you plan to do that same thing again, you should open Messages on the Mac and leave it on the Dock, running in the background. That way you will get notifications when texts arrive. or you can just sent the text as a text to the doctor, regardless of length, and then look for a response by text.

Thanks for the response. I needed to send the doctor a long message so did not want to text, for me, too hard to type long text messages, but easy using word application.

Yes, the doctor receives everything on their iPhone. And responded with an iPhone text message to my email address (icloud.com). So I thought that the response would show up in my Mac Mail iCloud. It did not. Nor did I receive a notification from Mac Messages. And nothing showed up on my Android Blackberry Keyone.

I was lucky I happened to open the Messages App else I would have never received the response.

Here is Messages For web that allows all Android Users to easily communicate with Mac Users using messaging , I think.

https://messages.android.com/

Thanks again.

If you addressed their iPhone phone number, that was NOT sent as an SMS, but rather Apple's proprietary format that allows Apple devices to all talk without using the cellular data plan. That being said, if the doctor responded on their iPhone, in Messages, to your iCloud (Apple iD), then the response goes back as the same format and is available in the Messages app wherever you can access it.

Android phone does NOT enter the picture here at all. There is NO way for Android phones to be a part of this Apple driven system since Messages is using Apple servers to facilitate the conversation as opposed to the normal (and open) SMS/MMS technologies used by all phone makers.

The message sent from the iPhone will NOT show up in your email since it is NOT an email.

Open System Preferences->Notifications and scroll down to Messages and ensure that have enabled notification as either Banners or Alerts when you are using the machine. Also ensure that "Show in notification center" is checked at the minimum. If none of those were set, that's why you didn't get the notification.

Actually, what Bob stated above is a lot easier than using email to text. By using the Messages app on your Mac, you will be using the Apple iMessage app which is much faster than the Android system. Responses from the doctor's phone will be received on your Mac in messages. Do as suggested by Jake and you won't have any problems in the future.
